Miss Bornen accuses Octavio Guinle of breach of promise, alleging a $500,000 settlement in a New York case. Guinle deposited $50,000 bail and the couple, who met last May, planned to marry in May but called it off last month.
John W. Platen, New York financier, inspects Mobile properties as W F Owen confirms N O M C plans to extend from Beaumont Mississippi to Ansley and connect with Louisville and Nashville. The Middleton Tennessee to Pea Ky line extension also discussed with work likely to start within the year.
An Associated Press report from Norfolk Virginia states experts believe the wreck of the Old Dominion steamer Monroe could save the bodies of 41 victims and its cargo, though the vessel itself is destroyed. The bodies have not surfaced due to impact and hull damage from the collision and sinking.
The central fair committee urges ongoing public enthusiasm and postpones active solicitation until after Mardi Gras. It thanks supporters and pledges every resource for the fair’s success. Died M. J. McDermott chairs the committee with E. J. Buck George Fearn Jr. and others.
Percy W. Maer the newly confirmed collector of the port of Mobile arrived from Columbus Mississippi with a party including Mrs Maer and several Columbus leaders. He will assume duty once commission arrives and plans to fairly represent Mobile Customs district while engaging with local business and public figures.
Governor O Nea l nominates Walker Lee Dunson of Alexander City as vice president of the National Top Notch Farmers Club for Alabama. Dunson is the youth awarded the first corn prize by the Bankers Association and the state.
The Mercantile Bank of Memphis is ordered closed after a defalcation by president C H Raine, with shortages estimated between 700000 and 1000000 dollars. A receiver was appointed, Raine pleaded guilty to embezzlement, and bonds were set while other local banks remain unaffected.

Newark police charged Charles L Manning as an accessory in the murder of his wife Hazel Herdman and her subsequent death. His sister-in-law Sadie Garrabrants, living with Manning, is detained as a witness. Evidence shows Manning allegedly drove Herdman to Newark and to hospitals before his arrest.
Captain Al Emmerson of the power schooner St Louis reported to Alabama Oyster Commission official J A Joullian that five men on a disabled boat refused help Sunday afternoon and might be drowned. Emmerson said the men asked for directions to Portersville and were working on a failing engine.
The Mobile ve. Weinaker Ice and Fuel Company cases were called in city court at 10 am. Unable to secure a jury, the case was postponed to Tuesday morning. Attorneys sought a struck jury with twenty names secured. more veniremen were ordered and the jury to be completed by noon tomorrow.
The joint rivers and harbor committee convened at the Chamber of Commerce at 2 pm to select a strong Mobile delegation for a Washington visit. Congressman George W. Taylor had telephoned urging the strongest possible representation on Kile's harbor matters. The final list was not released by press time.

President Wilson intends to name the Federal Reserve Board by March and is evaluating a group of men for suitability. He will discuss the potential appointees with Secretary McAdoo and Secretary Houston after their return from a western trip.
Washington February 9 The condition of Senator John Sharp Williams of Mississippi improved today after a severe grip confinement at home. Doctors believe he can return to duties in three or four days and had feared pneumonia earlier.

New York officials urge Niagara River water diversion regulation. Trust hearings continue. Baker announces plan to bomb his Asiatic exclusion actions.
The Mississippi Supreme Court ruling upholds a constitutional amendment ratified in 1911 that ends gubernatorial appointment of ten chancellors and seventeen circuit judges. The tenured officers will leave office on January 1, 1915, with elections planned for November to fill the posts.
The Ways and Means Committee of the Mobile Chamber of Commerce will hold an adjourned meeting Monday night in the assembly rooms of the chamber. Chairman J Leslie Taylor calls all 240 members to attend as important matters will be discussed. The session is the committee’s second since electing new officers and directors and will consider readopting the resolutions from two weeks ago.
Enterprise Miss February 9 The Bank of Enterprise failed to open and president F O Voorhees said business was suspended after an unexplained run on Saturday. He affirmed all depositors would be paid in full. The bank was capitalized at 15000 dollars.
A blaze at the Louisiana Freedmen's Home in New Orleans destroyed the facility early today. One child inmate was burned to death, and the total loss is estimated under five thousand dollars. Officials reported the fire originated in a rooming area and are investigating.
President Wilson and Governor Glynn discuss forming a new progressive Democratic organization in New York to coordinate campaigns for the autumn elections. William F McCombs and Osborn are tied to the reorganization plan as talks center on leadership, state contests, and national issues ahead of the New York primaries.
Boston February 9 plans are drawn to form an aviation detachment within the Massachusetts state militia Navy branch. Captain Daniel M. Gridge of Newton, brigade chief, will seek legislative support for an aerial squadron an aviation officer and ten mechanics. Some lawmakers and militia officers oppose the project fearing risk and liability.
