Charleston February 7 The West Virginia senate adopted a house resolution urging Congress to pass the Kenyon Sheppard bill prohibiting shipping intoxicants into territories. The state already prohibits manufacture and sale of intoxicating liquor after July 2.
The Alabama delegation in Congress except Rep Hobson endorses Frank P Glass of Birmingham for a position in President Wilsons cabinet. The move follows prior backing for Henry B Clayton as attorney general and signals strong state influence amid cabinet speculation.
Montgomery Ala Feb 7 The Alabama Supreme Court in an opinion by Justice McClellan sustains the former decision of the court of appeals upholding section four of the Fuller prohibition bill. The provision makes possession of liquor in a house not used exclusively as a dwelling prima facie evidence of unlawful keeping with the burden on the owner to show otherwise. The case involved M J Woodward convicted in Morgan County and seeking certiorari. It is the first construction of section four.
A northeast storm with freezing weather will sweep the Texas and Louisiana coasts today after developing off the mouth of the Rio Grande. The disturbance was centered offshore and moving eastward, with Gulf of Mexico impacts expected.
Andrew Williams, 35, a Black man, was lynched by a mob in Houston Mississippi after being accused of killing Mrs John C Williams wife of the county deputy chancery clerk. Mrs Williams body was found in an abandoned pit and a diamond ring was missing. Williams resisted arrest and was dragged from the jail to a tree where he was killed. Two Black women had testified they saw him enter the Williams home.
In Los Angeles on February 7 Earl Rogers defied doctors warnings to quit the Darrow case or die. He opened cross examination of George N. Lockwood the veniceman at the bribery scene that cut short the McNamara trial in November. Rogers had fallen ill last week but continued to work as Darrow led his own defense.
In New York on Feb 7 the Edward Mylus libel case, convicted in England and excluded from the U S on that ground, was postponed for one week in federal court. A writ of habeas corpus was to be argued but counsel observed ee as on ground.
The Krentler Arnold Hinge Last Co and other makers face a civil Sherman Act suit. A federal decree terminates license agreements fixing unpatented lasts and dissolves a club, establishing that tying patented and unpatented goods to fix prices is unlawful.
