Bulgarian war office reports Ottoman forces defeated south of the Kavak. Ottoman troops retreat in disorder toward Bulair as Bulgarians pursue. Allies seize coast of the Sea of Marmora up to Bulair.
The Daily Telegraph prints Ellis Ashmead Bartlett’s uncensored dispatch from Constantinople describing Turkish misery and destitution from war. The cabinet faces ceding Adrianople while seeking to save face as the treasury is empty. A large anti war demonstration denounces Young Turks as murderers and thieves amid cold, hunger, and harsh conditions in Turkish camps.
President Taft opened a three hour hearing on the new immigration bill in the East Room while protests from Germany Italy and the Netherlands objected to government inspectors aboard ships en route to America. Austria France and England were signaled to join. Notables including Julius Rosenwald Louis Marshall and several senators attended as Taft urged strong showings to persuade Congress.
In St Louis on February 6 the divorce suit of Captain Frederick W. Benteen of the Seventh United States Infantry against Maria Casa nova Benteen was dropped in circuit court. Authorities believe a reconciliation occurred.
Mrs Samuel C Edsall wife of Bishop Edsall of the Episcopal diocese of Minnesota died in Minneapolis after a cerebral hemorrhage. The bishop and family are noted church figures in the region.
Miss Margaret Huston of London an expert on voice culture says Americans neglect early training for speaking and singing, despite admiration for the country’s vocal range. She notes great European teachers praise the range but urge better teaching from childhood.
Subpoenas issued by the city court clerk summon members of the county revenue and road boards, highway and material contractors, and Civic League figures for a full day of testimony on charges of graft and bribery in road and bridge contracts involving County Highway Engineer Charles Dewas. The state solicitor intends a thorough probe.
Mrs T W Hannon resigns after twenty years as president of the Working Womans Home Association in Montgomery Alabama. Pauline Hausman will succeed her as president. Hannon began work in 1892 rising from secretary to president. The home now houses thirty three inmates.
Col N F Thompson of Mobile and president of the Alabama Land Congress spoke to a large Huntsville Chamber of Commerce gathering on rural credits and farm development for Alabama. Resolutions urged Governor O Neal to call a special legislative session to place farm mortgage companies on parity with individual lenders.
Washington February 6 the comptroller of the currency issued a call for a statement of the condition of banks of the United States as of date shown. The action requests banks to submit their latest financial data for review and oversight.
Mobile’s January trade report shows South America as the key partner with imports and exports totaling over 190000. Argentina and Uruguay shipped exports while Cuba emerged as Mobile’s top export customer with over 700000 in general merchandise and lumber. Germany, France and England also ranked high in exports. Honduras led imports among seventeen nations, with Germany following.
Washington reports martial law in Salvador as President Araujo lies in grave condition after an attack by five would-be assassins. A machette wound opened his head from skull to nostrils. one assailant captured, four at large. American minister Heimke said tranquility remains and the attack is viewed as an attempted removal of the president.
London Feb 6. James Bryce, British ambassador at Washington, is named by the British government a member of the permanent court of arbitration at The Hague. The announcement comes as Bryce retires from the United States once the Panama canal question is settled. Sir Cecil Spring-Rice will succeed Bryce as ambassador at Washington.
The Senate campaign fund investigating committee will question Charles Blumeling next Monday. He is alleged to have sold the Archbald letters to Hearst papers. Blumeling is brother in law of Charles H. Stump, who testified he took the letters and disposed of them through Blumeling.
Washington February 6 Republican senators caucused on how to meet the Democratic filibuster blocking President Taft's more than 1500 appointments. Many favored abandoning any further attempt to advance the confirmations.
Findlay Ohio Feb 6 The Ohio Oil Company today advanced the price of North Lima to 1.37, South Lima and Indiana to 1.32, and Illinois to 1.29 per barrel as announced by officials. The move affects regional markets and reflects price adjustments across multiple states.

The state legislature seeks a solution to halt the destruction amid 32,000 square miles of coal beds estimated at 500 billion tons. Locals say the lignite beds have smoldered since settlement, while miners claim the fires can be extinguished.

New York reports Police Captain Thomas W. Walsh on his sick bed confessed taking vice graft up to about 100000 in a single precinct and turned half to higher ups. District Attorney Whitman calls the confession the most important in exposing the police graft system. Walsh intends to testify before the grand jury next Monday.
In Chicago on February 6, 8 M Collins a University of Illinois freshman died at his home. His mother a fellow freshman in the school of agriculture died with him or soon after. The pair studied together and attended classes with adjoining seats known as the pals. Mrs Collins will not return to her studies.
Chicago, Feb. 6. President J. B. Sheenan of the Retail Shoe Dealers Association said Chicago women have larger feet than women in other cities, with feet that are the most perfectly shaped due to sensible shoes. He cited New York and Philadelphia women as having smaller feet but well-shaped. The average shoe size worn by Chicago women is a 5B last.
The vessel identified as the Nigerian bark Remittent, en route from South Africa to Liverpool, was found by the British steamer Row after being towed within a short distance of Cape Henry. The Abner 1 was also sighted near the same area on January 19.
