Crowds fill Mobile business district as electric lights and bunting transform streets for the carnival season. December-like weather brings large crowds Saturday night, with traffic officers guiding pedestrian flow and revelers eager to view the colorful decorations extending beyond the main streets.
William R. Wilson, owner of the Kansas City Star and political heavyweight, was found guilty by a Missouri court and sentenced to one year in jail. An appeal to the court of appeals on a habeas corpus writ was the only factor keeping him in custody tonight as Judge Guthrie handed down the ruling. The writ's returnable date was set for next day.
Special to Item. Gulfport Mississippi February 1. The case was given to the jury after defense argued the client was temporarily insane at the time of the crime. The defense rested on mental state rather than guilt.
The text lists officers on duty with Fort troops in the King's Parade. Commands include Major Louis R. Burgess as Commanding, Captain W R Doores as Adjutant, with Lieutenants Cullen Barlow Cunningham among others in the 39th and 998th Companies.
Miss Eleanor Douglas Wise of Baltimore and Duke de Richelieu plan to marry on February 8 and then establish a permanent New York residence after their honeymoon. The Duke is descended from a cardinal and his mother was American, Alice Heine, daughter of New Orleans banker Michael Heine.
Deputies jailed two African American men named Charlie Williams and Charlie Jones after they allegedly robbed a Whistler line car passenger, Gale, of 11.20. Gale identified the suspects at a lodging house on Commerce Street where they were captured. Police hinted at other pickpockets in the city to be rounded up.
Ernest E. Hart, a notable Council Bluffs banker and former Iowa Republican national committeeman, died in Long Beach California after arriving there two weeks earlier. The report notes his prominence in Iowa politics and banking.
Washington February 1. James P. Gerry a former Treasury Customs employee testified before the Ways and Means Committee that the American Sugar Refining Company paid 750000 to the government to avoid a court dispute and further publicity after underweight frauds. He said the company had already owed 250000 in drawback duties and that paying the full amount was safer for its reputation. Gerry urged tariff law changes to curb such abuses and restore public confidence.
In Pittsburg on Feb 1 the American Federation of Labor called a general strike against United States Steel Corporation after a mass meeting. The move targets 40,000 workers across mills in Pittsburgh and extends to Chicago Gary Cleveland Buffalo Pueblo and other steel centers where the company operates.

State and County Tax Collector Phelan B. Dorson reported a total of 2876 poll taxes paid for the year at midnight closing time, about 400 fewer than last year. Workingmen rushed to meet the midnight deadline after The Item printed the notice.
A brief filed with the House Indian Affairs committee accuses Secretary of the Interior Walter Fisher and other officials of being controlled by Standard Oil. The document, prepared for the Independent Oil Company, claims leases with the Osage Nation are worth up to 100000000, stating a czar at 26 Broadway dominates U S government actions.
A Mobile pelts dealer sent skunk skins by parcels post which were refused, while Limberger cheese passes unmolested. A V-shaped odor episode followed a three and a half pound perishable parcel, later found to contain Limberger cheese buried under other packages. An old man requested delivery for Hiram Taylor, ending the episode.
The Senate voted 47 to 23 to adopt the Works resolution proposing a constitutional amendment for a six year term for the president. The measure moves to the House for a two-thirds vote, then to the president, before state ratification by three quarters of the states. The effort faces a long path to become operative, with hopes it will pass before Wilson’s term ends.

A plan sets mayor as president and county board president as vice president with monthly reports. The superintendent positions boys in trades and appoints J Boynton as assistant superintendent with Mrs Mary Seca as matron and cook.
