Official Mobile Clearing House figures show 1916 total clearings of 59,376,043.67, up from 55,282,906.76 the previous year. December 1916 clearings reached 6,190,465.04, up 8,066,245.74 from November, with gains extending across August through December.
Vienna dispatch reports Eduard Strauss composer of dance music has died at his Vienna home at age 81. He belonged to the famed Strauss musical family, son of Johann and brother to Josef the Waltz King, with hundreds of dance pieces credited to him and years as court balls collector in Petrograd.
Monroe La December 30 With Cordova Alabama oil discoveries President Wilson may pardon E C Drew who serves a federal prison term in Atlanta. Four years ago Drew promoted an Alabama oil company claiming Cordova field oil then faced fraud conviction. Experts now say no oil exists but recent discoveries vindicate his efforts.
London dispatch reports General Baron Von Bissing governor general of Belgium is seriously ill with mania in Brussels. The Ex age Telegraph’s Amsterdam correspondent notes a sympathetic message from Emperor William. Retirement due to health is widely discussed.
The Associated Press summary reports German forces under Field Marshal von Mackensen advancing along the front from the Romanian Carpathians to the Danube. Russians and Rumanians conduct rear guard withdrawals toward Sereth as Franco-Belgian front activity is minor aside from Verdun where German reports claim repelling French attacks on Dead Man hill.

Strother Burroughs, described as a negro, was arrested here Saturday morning by Deputy Sheriff Lino Donahue on charges of forgery and embezzlement. He is wanted at Clarke County Alabama.

A surge of vessels has energized the water front with dock laborers busy loading cargo. Four sailing ships at Turnes Hartwell docks haul lumber for Cuban ports while schooners Waltham and Ralph M Hayward tow out loaded craft. Munson docks host Munsomo and Florence Thurlow plus Hayward loading timber. Harrison T Beacham loads lumber nearby with several sailing ships anchored awaiting orders.
The steamer Oswald is loading general cargo at the south side of Pier 5 for Liverpool under Elder-Dempster management. Officials say more vessels are bunkering at Ollinger Bruce ways on Pin to island and Gulf Dry Docks. Magnu Manson, Bessie Whiting, Maud Dudley, Florence Howard, and Edna Pickels occupy docks awaiting repairs or loading. The boom in shipping is expected to continue with vessels like the Sylvanian preparing to load for Mobile Linera Inc. and Liverpool.

A naval observatory memorandum reports 1917 will see four solar and three lunar eclipses with a total lunar event visible nationwide from 12:50 to 4:30 a m eastern time. The last seven eclipse year was in the previous century and the next will be 1935.
Paris reports the allied reply to Germany’s December 12 note will be delivered to Ambassador Sharp tonight and published tomorrow. The document reiterates central empire responsibility for the war, calls for reparations and restitutions, and argues Berlin must offer guarantees after 1914 treaty contempt.
Berlin reports that President Wilson sent a second explanatory note to the Central Powers and Entente nations. The note has not been presented as the German reply showed Tokyo influence not swayed by alleged “mini conceptions” about Wilson’s aims.
Washington report notes Secretary Lansing declined to comment on a December statement. The briefing left officials and the public awaiting further clarification from the administration.
Cooperation from the federal government through the department of agriculture is pledged to Mobile for an experimental station if Alabama appropriates the initial funds. The Chamber of Commerce in a letter from Secretary IL F Houston reports the accord and has urged the state department of agriculture to endorse the plan. Germany to exchange 100 French prisoners of war for Switzerland in a gesture tied to Pope Benedicts suggestion. The men are fathers of three or more children and inmates of German prison camps for eighteen months. The move awaits reciprocal French action.
Dr. Ernest Samuel Feagin a prominent Mobile physician since 1906 died suddenly at 4 55 am Saturday at his home 979 Government Street He had been ill only minutes after attending a social event He was a partner in Feagin McGehee with offices at 166 Conti Street A Covington County Alabama native he studied at the University of Alabama School of Medicine graduating in 1905 He served as an intern at Mobile City Hospital then practiced with Dr Eugene D Bondurant He belonged to the Mobile Medical Society Knights of Columbus Council 666 and other groups He is survived by his widow Henrietta McPhillips a brother Frank Feagin and other relatives in Feagin Alabama The death shock rippled through Mobile society.
At a special meeting of the Board of School Commissioners the country school committee was authorized to prepare a report showing all possible needs of the schools outside the city limits. The information will assist in distributing $159,000 from the recent school bond issue. Committee members are Dr L W Roe chairman John W Egan and Albert G Quinn. Rural funds will be spent where most needed and as economically as conditions permit.
Dec 30 forecast calls for generally fair but moderately cold weather in the Southeast. Rains likely Wednesday or Thursday and the weather will warm after Tuesday in the south Atlantic and east Gulf states.
Mayor Harry Pillans barred reporters from a public conference between the city commission and a state harbor board committee including J. C. Rich G. G. Crawford and F. G. Blair. The mayor halted the meeting and stated the conference would not continue while those present were in the room.
Neenae Porter testified that upon arriving at the harbor board and city commission conference at noon she withdrew her presence after Mayor Harry Pillars declared he would speak to no one while a reporter was present. Chairman Joseph C. Rich urged continuation, but the meeting moved to avoid embarassment.
Rich, chairman of the harbor board special committee, said a discussion with city commissioners lasted hours but no definite decision was reached. The Buck plan for improving Mobile's port facilities was endorsed by the Rich committee and by the harbor board after a favorable committee report.
The harbor board agreed to follow committee decisions. Rich urged the Buck plan endorsement with power to arrange details to implement the plan quickly. O Connor then sought endorsement for the Nesbitt plan, which passed. Dr A G Ward is to take steps to implement the Nesbitt plan per Nesbitt of Birmingham. Continues on page eight.
Gowns valued at 500 dollars, owned by Mrs William Ellis Corey wife of the Midvale Steel Company president and former United States Steel Corp head, were seized by customs in New York pending federal action for not declaring import duties upon arrival from France. The gowns were in trunks at a Paris fashion setting and claimed for a chateau backed by Parisian fashion houses.
