Alabama banks excluding national institutions reported October 15 resources at 68.73 million dollars, up from March. Loans and discounts rose to 48.59 million, overdrafts fell about 50 percent, currency held decreased slightly, capital stock rose, and deposits edged down with savings-led gains.
The Alabama Hotel Men's Association held its final session aboard the U S Revenue Cutter Winona after a river and bay ride. Birmingham and Gadsden contested hosting next June’s convention with Birmingham favored for central location. Notables Gaston Saux and wife arrived. a grand banquet at Cawthon Hotel featured Toast master H A Bruner and gifts to Miss Orrie McMillan.
In Knoxville Tennessee on December 14 the Louisville and Nashville Railroad ordered East Tennessee coal operators to supply their entire output for three days weekly through December 25 or coal will be confiscated from its tracks. Operators protest. rail road may raise domestic fuel prices due to the disruption.
The Chamber of Commerce and a Business League will hold its annual meeting on January 18, 1913 to elect officers for the next year. Two nominating committees were appointed to present tickets for four officers and fifteen directors. Committees report within seven days and tickets will be printed for members. The election is set for January 13 with installation the following night. G G Card was named acting secretary to fill an unexpired term. A Torrans system for real estate filings was discussed but no action taken. Opposition among some members influenced the directors’ actions.
A Bell Buckle Bank in Tennessee was robbed this morning by safe blowers who cut town wires first. About $3,000 was secured. The bank carries burglary insurance. A $100 reward is offered for each participant.
Directors of the Southern League Baseball Association convened in Birmingham for the annual session. Most members arrived shortly before the 10 am start, with discussions split over various issues. The key debate centers on a player salary cap, with smaller cities favoring 250 and larger cities resisting lower limits.

Fire yesterday partially destroyed the home of J. W. Ray at 746 South Court street in Montgomery Alabama. The loss is estimated near 4000 dollars and is covered by insurance.
Washington December 14 The House money trust investigating committee was not in session today Hearings will be resumed Monday.
Paris dispatch reports Mrs Barnes and Walter Mumm as principals in a sensational Thursday night shooting. Barnes was wounded. Mumm shot first, then Barnes returned fire. A warrant for Barnes may be issued if Mumm’s condition worsens. Henri Mumm called the wound not grave and refused further comment.
Paris reports Walter Mumm a noted sport figure and wine family member was shot by a wealthy American socialite. She left for London as prosecutors opened an inquiry though no charges were filed. The incident sparked a hush, with trainers cancelling races and clubs buzzing.
Mrs Mary Barnes a Pennsylvania native linked to the Mumm shooting affair in Paris. She first married Henry David Barnes of Baltimore at 15, then divorced with alimony, and later wed George H Creel in 1919 before living in Europe. A later French divorce filing has no record of final grant. Her maiden name was Van Rensimer.
Lawrence Murray reports U S banking power rose to 22 548 707 000 in 1912 up 5 69 percent from 1911 and 27 8 percent from 1908. National banks paid 120 300 872 in dividends and earned 149 056 603, with 83 banks placed in voluntary liquidation and eight failed.
Dr. W H Sanders state health officer says he has received no official notice of a mandamus suit filed in Mobile circuit court to force the state board of medical examiners to grant a medical certificate to Thomas P Russell of Gait's town. He questions service on all board members and awaits official notification before consulting the attorney general. The petition cites examinations, fees and denied certificates for multiple named board members in Mobile, Montgomery, Talladega, Birmingham, Eutaw, Selma.
President Taft sent to the Senate the nomination of Gilbert B. Deans to be United States Marshal for the Southern District of Alabama. The action was reported from Washington on December 14.
