Crowds gathered under awnings as Mr. Adams, head of the parade committee, announced the abandonment of the main evening attraction. Telephones buzzed with inquiries about a shortened program and uncertain events amid the Satsuma Day festivities.
The parade left the Loop and moved downtown amid steady rain and crowds. Officials in formal attire turned over city keys to Dr. O F Be Winberg as speeches sounded in umbrella shelter. Hotel lobbies were crowded and the Satsuma dinner began at the House at 1 30 with wide display of citrus fruits and decorations. Tonight the grand Satsuma baskets auction will be held at the Battle House.
A breakfast for Governor Iles Henderson at the Battle Quarters hotel in Mobile featured strictly home raised products. The event, hosted by M J McDermott, included a delegation from the Fi ance Committee and several state officials led by J A Wade. Professor J C Price accompanied the governor for the Satsuma occasion.
A committee led by Mr. F. W. distributes satsumas to inmates and staff at Mobile County Asylum Benevolent Home Catholic male Orphanage Protestant Orphan Asylum Maternity Home Industrial School Little Sisters of the Poor Mobile Infirmary City Bondurant Sanatorium and other places as part of the annual Satsuma Day observance.
The Baker School basketball team will meet the Independents at 11 o clock Saturday on the Baker School court at 155 North Claiborne. Friends are invited to watch.
Carnival organizers in Mobile announce prizes for best individual maskers and best group at the 1917 Carnival. Joseph Is Manning chairs the maskers committee and promises the feature will be extremely amusing and a highlight of the event.
Maple Camp No 1 Woodmen of the World held its annual session at Moose Hall with about five hundred in attendance. Officers elected included A B Carlisle consul commander H W Cunningham advisor lieutenant E F Koppersmith banker re elected Ed K Cogburn clerk re elected J A Vautrot escort J F Engel watchman Peter Untrevier sentry Charles H Delhemme auditor re elected Dr S F Hale and Dr J T Inge camp physicians re elected Levine Bauer camp deputy.
The Associated Press reports unsettled weather in Alabama with possible local rains and cold periods tonight and Friday. Mississippi is expected to experience rain with colder conditions tonight and tomorrow.
Prep school football title match in south Alabama between Barton Academy and University Military School at Monroe Park Field. Local talent on both sides, with Barton practicing hard under Coach McCants and Kendal while U M S plans open play to counter Barton’s power runs. Rooters clubs rally as the two schools prepare for a high spirited battle.
Dr John O Rush praised Barton students at a Wednesday gathering. He seeks faculty approval for Spring Hill College footballers to attend the battle. A probable Barton lineup lists Moulton, Harris, Williams, Britton, Stoddard, Plummer, Green, Costello, Friedenthal, Hays, Battson, Leatherbury and McPhillips with varied backfield and line positions.
Mr A D Davis and associates plan a packing house in Prichard. Davis calls the project urgent and intends rapid construction. Cattle and hog growers pledged support to supply the plant. H P Henschein of Chicago arrives to supervise start of work.
The Weather Bureau forecasts additional rain tonight and Friday with little temperature change. Moderate easterly to southerly winds may follow, while Northwest Alabama and Mississippi expect colder air after the rain. Rainfall has been widespread in gulf states and the lakes region. a high barometer cold air mass follows the current low.
Berlin reports Rumanian forces retreating on all fronts with 9 000 taken prisoner in yesterday’s battles. German officials say Bucharest is largely deserted as Teutons enter the capital, with Rumanians likely abandoning most of the kingdom to retreat into Moldavia near the Russian frontier.
Mr. Howard S. Williams, publicity director for the Mississippi Centennial Exposition, urges Satsuma orange growers to form a committee to plan a presence at Gulfport in December 1917. Proposal includes a Satsuma orange shaped building and elaborate exhibit to attract hundreds of thousands of visitors. banners and promotions will tour conventions in Illinois, Kentucky, Georgia and beyond.
The Norwegian steamer Bluefields under United Fruit charter is high and dry seven miles east of Puerto Cortez Honduras. Captain F O Standvik reports the crew safe. The Agnella cannot reach to pull her off. The vessel has long served Mobile as part of United Fruit's fleet.
Fire crews were called to the rosin yard of the Alabama Naval Stores Company Wednesday night at about 9 20 for a blaze in a barrel of rosin. The fire was put out with only slight damage.
Berlin dispatch reports Teutonic forces capturing Campino on the Kronstadt to Plocehti railroad amid continued front retreat by Romanian troops. In yesterday’s combats over 9,000 Romanians were taken prisoner.
Berlin reports on December 7 that German troops on the Verdun front advanced on Hill 304 and entered French trenches to seize the height. The claim comes as fighting continues along the Verdun sector with further assaults reported yesterday.
Russian official statement reports German forces seized positions near a wood near Shelyov and near Gunalovtkse on the western front. It adds that German gains were reversed by Russian counter attacks in both locations.
A Copenhagen dispatch reports 100000 Romanians have been sent to German prison camps since hostilities with Romania began. The Berlin Ideal Anzieger quotes German authorities as saying Romanians may retreat to Moldavia leaving Wallachia behind. Bucharest, before capture, was nearly deserted and uninjured.
A Petrograd dispatch says Bucharest’s capture would bring enormous prestige to Germany and its allies but would not alter war strategy or harm the Allied cause if German forces fail to establish a Black Sea coast presence. It notes the vital point remains in Russian hands, not Romanian.
Berlin reports Bulgarian forces repulsed a British attack in the Struma sector of the Macedonian front. Cerna river positions seized by Serbians the day before were recaptured.
Teutonic troops entered Russian positions west of Lutsk in Volhynia yesterday. Five Russian counterattacks to retake the ground were repulsed, according to the Russo-Galician front report.
Telegram to the Alvarado Mining Milling Company says American miner How ard Gray was killed by Villa bandits when they entered Parral Chihuahua on November 5. A messenger from Parral reports the town was attacked and Gray killed during the raid.
Officials said over 50 000 farmers applied for mortgage loans totaling about 150 million dollars, around seventeen times the amount immediately available once the twelve farm loan banks form. Most applications are from the South and West with hundreds more daily. Iowa accounts for many loan requests reaching 2 000 farmers.
The banks expect to issue bonds covering nearly all their capital shortly after organization. The board is deliberating the interest rate and aims for a rate not exceeding 5 percent, lower than loan rates. Daily talks with bankers from various regions focus on setting loan rates.
