Greek troops hold the line at Seres in northeastern Greece against Bulgarian pressure. General staff orders to retire have not been followed as volunteers rapid reinforcements arrive to bolster the defense.
Paris reports the French war office states Bulgarian forces entrench on the Struma left bank and along the Serres highway. Anglo French troops repulse several Bulgarian attempts to retake positions north of Palmes and in the Doiran sector. Serbians reclaim Hill 1506 northwest of Ostrovo lake, a position lost on August 23.
London reports no offensive action by Bulgarians or Entente forces on the Macedonian front. Artillery fighting continues with no infantry encounters. Doiran front shows artillery activity, Struma front reports Bulgarian entrenchments dispersed, and Orlak bridge shelled. Serbians remain on the same line as yesterday.
On the Somme front near Guillemont, German forces launched a strong nighttime attack to regain the initiative, continuing efforts as described in the battlefield dispatches.
Senator Penrose renewed his attack on the pending emergency revenue bill in the senate. Senator Hoke Smith answered criticizing the estimates. the Georgia senator praised the Democratic administration, claiming the nation is more prosperous than ever with over 74 million dollars of added surplus in the treasury.
Senator Smith charged Republicans erred by including a 25 million for the Danish West Indies purchase not yet appropriated. Senator Penrose argued munition taxes assumed huge profits, noting many manufacturers in the munitions business fared poorly or failed, with few earning strong profits.
Allied operations in the Balkans gain momentum with Serbian gains on a hill northwest of Ostrovo Lake and Bulgarian advances on the left flank. Entente center faces attacks but repels them while artillery remains active in Lake Doiran. Bulgarian push on the Saloniкi front continues as Entente forces retreat along the Struma. Somme activity slows though artillery remains active in northern France.
Dan Petty arraigned in the recorder's court on violating the prohibition law denied guilt. An officer testified to finding John Reed drinking whisky at Petty's place. Reed said a friend supplied it. Petty and Reed posted bonds and appealed to the city court. Several others pleaded guilty or received continuances in related cases.
Sheriff forces raided five locations on Wednesday afternoon and reported small quantities of prohibited liquor. Sites include Southwest Franklin and Adams, northwest Joachim and Lipscomb, Lawrence and Eslava, Wilkinson and Canal, and Washington avenue and Virginia. Five men Patsy Lamb Carey Jones Elliott McKay Willie Grant and Elijah Davis were arraigned Thursday on prohibition charges and released on bond with bondsmen F. E. Haas J. F. Flynn Joe Brooks Morris Brooks J. G. Tyrrell R. Mc Bride A. V. Nezich and A. D. Davis.
Amos Dade, a chauffeur, was fined $25 or 25 days by Recorder Edington Thursday. Officer James Foster testified that Dade drove at a terrific speed and struck Lucile Morris, a Black woman, injuring her seriously.
Washington reports after talks between President Wilson and railroad leaders the eight hour day is accepted in principle by the eight member sub committee. They urge a freight rate increase from the interstate commerce commission and the creation of a permanent Canadian style labor board to handle future disputes with secret strike votes possible after investigation and arbitration.
Commissioner Chambers of the federal board of mediation relayed proposals to the men who seemed to favor them. Judge Chambers briefed President Wilson as the railroad executives’ sub committee was called to the White House. None would say if Wilson reported back.
The Citizens' Central Relief Committee investigated unfinished business and pending bills at a Thursday meeting. Secretary E. Q. Norton reports continued requests for aid from distant regions, but no new relief will be given until the committee confirms its financial status.
The regular meeting of the Ways and Means Committee of the Chamber of Commerce was announced by chairman J. D. Andrews. The session starts at 7:30 p.m. with supper served at 7:00. only routine business is expected.
Washington manager Griffith notified President Ball of the St Louis American League club that a protest was filed over the second game with Washington. St Louis won 4 to 2 after umpires restarted the game knowing nine innings could not be played. seven innings were saved.
Dr. W J Selkin federal tick law officer reports 20000 head of cattle dipped in August through the 19th in this county. He notes a sharp July increase and widespread opposition waning as more owners join the effort. Eradication work continues in eighteen counties with several to be released from quarantine September 1 for cooperative effort with officials and the Alabama Live Stock Sanitary Board.
The Rotary Club honored six members of the Joint Rivers and Harbor Committee for securing a favorable recommendation from the board of engineers for a 20 foot channel at Mobile. Honorees were Horace Turner chairman Stewart Brooks J Taylor John T Cochrane S A LeBlanc and A J Parsons. J O Smith spoke on the third section of the Rotary code of ethics.
Washington Aug 24 amendments to the federal reserve law were presented to enable national banks to further foreign commerce by establishing foreign branches, accepting foreign drafts, or bills of exchange. The measure also widens discountable paper and allows small national banks in towns under 6000 to serve as agents for insurance companies.
The Danish Landsthing voted 39 against a proposal to sell the Danish West Indies to the United States. The lower house had approved the $25 million sale, but the upper house rejection delays final action and the treaty may be revisited after the general election.
The transport Hancock, which grounded on a bar at the mouth of the Mississippi last night, was floated early today and continued to Tampico. The commander reported that damage was of no consequence.
The transport Hancock, sailing from New Orleans to Vera Cruz, ran aground on a sand bar at the mouth of the Mississippi last night. The New Orleans navy yard commandant reported only slight damage and expected flotation today.
Paris dispatch reports King Ludwig III of Bavaria, 71, stricken with apoplexy and in grave condition. He married Archduchess Marie Therese, ascended the throne in 1912, and was made field marshal last year after visiting Bavarian troops on the French front in January.
The weather bureau reports from Washington indicate the tropical disturbance first reported Tuesday near Porto Rico has diminished in intensity and become hard to detect. Storm warnings remain posted at Miami and Key West, Florida.
James Lynn Rodgers announced to Mexico’s foreign office that a preliminary conference between U S and Mexican representatives to settle international difficulties will convene at the Baltimore in New York City on Monday September 4. Mexican relatives erree will leave Saturday. The final conference will be held at a location on the New England coast.
The North German Lloyd Uner Willehad, sheltered in Boston since the war began, slipped from harbor early today bound for New London Connecticut after securing clearance papers last night. Line officials say the move cuts docking costs and deny any link to the expected arrival of the German merchant submarine Bremen.
