Captains of several vessels report sighting the German cruisers Leipzig and Nurnberg about 80 miles off the Farallones. The Nurnberg was said to be in the Far East earlier. Reports place the ships 25 miles south of the Farallon Islands with readings of their names and near passages by multiple ships. Three British warships and other vessels are believed in the area.
Britain will permit two American officers to accompany front line British troops as observers in the European war. Washington reports the United States queried all powers about American officers serving as observers and Britain answered affirmatively.
