The department of commerce ordered customs to deny clearance to foreign merchant ships converted for war use or carrying reservists. New York inspectors must verify ships are solely for passengers and freight with no arms. Swiss official Hubscher said Switzerland would issue a statement.

Protest Meeting Against Solvent Credit Tax Opens

In Pensacola Florida J Leroy Brown 22 was shot and killed after Mrs Florence McGowan mother of 15 year old Vivian McGowan opened fire in the courthouse corridor to thwart a marriage proposal Brown who faced a charge of intercourse with a girl under 18 had waived examination and was bound over for trial The shooting occurred after the mother agreed to a possible marriage settlement and Brown reportedly fled to Mobile before being brought back for trial

Armistice Sought as German Attack on Liege Advances

Reports from Brussels and London indicate German troops seeking a twenty four hour armistice at Liege while later dispatches say the Liege forts were abandoned after three days of fighting. German divisions retreat to the left bank of the Meuse as observers note massed infantry and heavy losses. The German consul’s son Count Von Arnim was wounded and died. Three Belgian forts Liege Namur and Huy are highlighted for delaying the German advance and aiding French mobilization.

Governor O Neal Unable to Visit Mobile Camp

A.G. Quinn informed by Gov O Neals staff that the governor would not visit Mobile to inspect the artillery camp as planned. Adjutant General J B Scully announced the governor would attend next week. Major L 8 Dorrance led a drill inspection marred by heavy rain but noted the troops kept the tented camp orderly and the drainage favorable.
