Brussels dispatch reports the Belgian Eleventh Brigade repulsed a German attack in the Liege district and pursued fleeing Prussians. The Gazette says German losses were about 8,000 while Belgian losses were small, with some Germans retreating into Dutch territory.
At 4 AM the German Tenth Army Corps attacked haudfontaine and Bourceles forts from the southeast while artillery bombarded Flemalle across the Meuse five miles southwest of Liege. Belgians seized seven guns and prisoners, surrender proposals dismissed. Anti German sentiment rises with arrests of German residents on espionage charges as police guard frightened crowds. The governor Emmet O Neal states he cannot suspend state taxation on solvent credits and expects taxes to follow lawful requirements. He notes financial conditions will improve with government aid and warns of upcoming legal battles over tax assessments as counties begin valuing credits.

C F Heslap, alleged bogus representative of American National Insurance of Galveston, was arrested in Lucedale Mississippi on charges of obtaining money under false pretenses from residents of western Alabama. He was arrested at the request of the Alabama insurance department and will be returned for trial.
Governor O Neal named Dr R C Prather as chairman and T Stillwell as associate member of the Girard excise commission. The move ends a dispute over the commission personnel and is reported from Montgomery Alabama on August 6 1930.
Washington reports the first acceptance of aid from the American Red Cross. A message from The Hague says hospital units will be dispatched as soon as transportation is available.
Twenty of thirty eight victims identified after a Kansas City Southern passenger train collided with a Missouri and North Arkansas gasoline motor car at Tipton Ford Missouri. Dozens burned as the gasoline tank burst and fire swept the cars. Identified dead include Mrs C Eshleman of Dewey Oklahoma Bert Johnson of Oklahoma City and Herbert Ratliff Eureka Springs Arkansas.
Grave fears were expressed for the safety of hundreds of Americans who may be unable to leave Belgium after the first battle near the Meuse. Pepinster Verviers Wise and Argenteau reportedly attacked and burned by German forces. Spa lies close by and the Pepinster rail line is destroyed, cutting escape routes. Liege’s Cockerill works employ around ten thousand, with Belgium’s key arms and locomotive plants located there.
Official dispatches report improving conditions for Americans overseas but continue to urge rapid evacuation. Paris sees some panic relief, yet at least thirty thousand Americans need transport with six months needed under current capacity. Vienna and Milan show similar demand as officials consider commandeering vessels if necessary.
