Cotton prices surged in New York and New Orleans trading with gains of about 15 dollars per bale versus last December. Active buying pushed futures to new yearly highs as Wall Street strength and improving trade outlook fed demand. Spot markets in New Orleans and New York closed with gains though realising caused some pullback.
Representative Democrats in Mobile voiced support for Governor Henderson at German Relief Hall while memorializing Alabama’s Senate to pass a July recess bond bill to pay floating state debt. Speakers included A C Danner of Mobile Coal Co and other local leaders urging unity to restore Alabama’s credit and honor.
April 10 reports scene of wild excitement as renewal of operations on the New York Stock Exchange sent prices rising 1 to 3 points amid heavy buying. United States Steel led gains while Bethlehem Steel and Rock Island showed mixed movement. First hour volume surpassed records since 1909 with Schley trading over half a million shares and total two hour sales reaching about 800000 shares.
Dauphin Island pilot Lee Lami and Mrs. Florence Mary Lockler married Saturday at 12:30 in Judge Price Williams Jr. probate court office. Several intimate friends attended. Licenses issued Saturday to Claud J. Farmer and Vera Marie Pullen. Friday M. Tapia obtained a license to wed Mrs. Mary Elizabeth Harding. Tapia is a known city fire department member.
Delegates to the Group 7 bankers convention of the Alabama Bankers Association praised J. B. Pike of Atlanta Ga for his address on the federal reserve system. They asked Vice President A C Tonsmeire to print the speech as a pamphlet for distribution. Tonsmeire intends to comply.
The forecast notes generally fast winds tonight and Sunday with cooler conditions on Sunday. Alabama expects partly cloudy skies with probable showers tonight and Sunday. Mississippi shows partly cloudy tonight.
Four battleships and four cruisers, escorting several transports, were seen near Dedengatch bound for Enos in the Gulf of Saros. The ships bombarded Turkish positions from about three miles for two hours before turning back toward the Dardanelles.
Mayor Harry Pillans leads Mobile street department in surfacing all unpaved streets from the river west to Wilkinson and from canal street south to Warren street with city road making machinery. Superintendent J. J. Heller directs the work which features a hardened centre by the street force and has been praised by visiting expert road builders.
Burglars robbed a store at Old Shell road and Kenneth street after midnight on Friday night. Dan Wheeler reported theft of several hundred dollars in groceries and other goods including tobacco cigars canned goods and thirteen pounds of coffee. Entrance was gained through a rear door. Police and sheriff are investigating.
The Johnson City Tennessee Chamber of Commerce filed a complaint with the Interstate Commerce Commission accusing railroad rates from Cincinnati Pittsburgh Cleveland and other points as discriminatory and unfair to Johnson City and surrounding lines.

The talks focus on Galicia and other territories in exchange for guarantees of Austrian integrity in Transylvania. The April report notes insistent rumors of negotiations and a possible exchange to preserve Austrian holdings.

Montgomery April 10 special. State board of health members testified to the legislative investigating committee denying that the state medical association is an oligarchy. They said the association does practical good with a small appropriation and that the board is not self perpetuating.
Washington dispatches say General Obregon presses the defeated Villa army after Celaya and moves toward San Luis Potosi while Villa forces evacuate Dolores in Hidalgo. Villa representatives deny a decisive Obregon victory and report only light skirmishing. War Department notes no shots on the American flag at Brownsville since March 27.
Berlin reports Germany seeks assurance from the American embassy that German submarine crews held by Britain receive the same treatment as other prisoners of war. The inquiry follows rumors about their conditions and possible differences in welfare.
Frank Safford, chief witness for Rae Tanzer in identifying James W. Osborne, is held on 12000 bail for further examination in perjury probes. Safford testified Osborne visited a New Jersey hotel with Tanzer, but Tanzer later withdraws a 50000 breach of promise suit and says Osborne is not the man she knew.

Four of the five officials of the International Lumber and Development Company started their prison terms in Philadelphia after a 30 day presidential clemency respite expired. The group faced fines and swindling convictions in U S court. one member, J H Armstrong, received a prison sentence.
The weekly crop report shows cotton planting underway in most areas with heavy fertilizer use and much soil prepared for sweet potatoes. Corn planting near completion in some districts but much remains to be planted and early corn often replanted after cold weather. Fruit trees sprayed and fertilized with fair prices for berries, cantaloupes, and melons. peaches hurt by cold. Irish potatoes look good. Pasture and livestock conditions improve as farmers plant sugar cane and hatch young poultry. The oat crop is good with plans to plant corn and beans afterward.
Conditions improved across farming regions as warm weather aided growth since the week’s end. Reports note frost and cold days in early April damaged tender plants and seeds, but sunshine has revived growth. peach crops suffer up to 40 percent in some areas while fruit trees bloom and planting continues. oats and other feed crops will be planted and harvested with marketing already beginning for strawberries radishes and onions.

The Gulfport Commercial Unit plans a Monday meeting to form the Jackson and Gulf Coast Highway Association promoting a coastal road from Jackson through Hazlehurst to Gulfport. Anita Stevenson Spang and Mrs. Laura Stevenson Spang will present a piano and song recital under the Matl Musical Club. The Favre shipyards won a U S contract to build two barges, each 72 feet long, costing 17000 dollars for use at Tang Harbor.
Karl Bitter, noted sculptor and head of sculpture for the Pacific Exposition, is reported dead after a speeding automobile collision in New York. The victim, associated with the Buffalo exposition and a leading American artist, was found seriously injured with authorities treating the incident as a fatal crash.
