Fire destroys steamer American and municipal docks at Mobile
A burning river steamer named the American with a freight cargo burned to the water’s edge at the foot of St Michael street between 1 and 2 a m. A light barge attached also burned. The vessel and a drifting barge were wrecked. docks were saved only by towing the burning hull away. Capt Lindsey, officer of the vessel, and others reported cries and dog sounds as the ship broke up. The packet plied between Mobile and Montgomery and Selma on the Alabama river and had arrived from upstream with freight before burning at the docks.

Amsterdam reports the 4300 ton American steamer Greenbrier has foundered in the North Sea. Crew saved and landed at Amrum and Fohr islands. Bryan Foley aged seventy one died after a three day illness at his daughter's home in Mobile. A native of County Lathron Ireland he lived in Mobile about fifty years. Survived by wife and four daughters Mrs Alvarez Mrs Nelson Mrs Frei and Mrs Calvin all of Mobile. He belonged to St Vincent's Catholic Church Catholic Knights of America and Knights of Honor. Remains were taken by Berevson Sands Undertaking for burial with funeral to be announced.
