Walter E. Brown Jr became the youngest Noble Grand in Texas Oddfellow Lodge during installation ceremonies on January 23. He previously led the Junior Oddfellow Lodge before joining the Oddfellows.
Casting for Curtain Club production Our Town is underway with Naomi Norton directing. Cast includes Theron Waddell as stage manager James Harris as Dr Gibbs Ruth Deason as Mrs Gibbs Terry Bone as George Gibbs and others. The Thornton Wilder three act play explores daily life love marriage and life’s meaning.
The honored list shows Dean Walter Rundell announcing the fall honor roll. Students with all A grades include Jennifer Ann Chaisty, Michel Rhodes Lawles, Julia Florence Sorge, James Edgar Turcotte, Michael Arthur Ward, and Linda Joy Washburn. Others posted 2.9, 2.8, 2.7, and 2.6 averages with names listed for each level.
School will dismiss at 12 30 p m Thursday February 23 for teachers to attend the TJCTA annual convention in Dallas. Classes will not meet on February 24.
The eighth annual Senior Night at Lee College opens at 5:30 in the Liberal Arts Building with registration by Ranglerettes and greetings from the Student Council. Faculty speakers, refreshments, a bonfire, pep rally, art exhibit, and a dance in the gym with Bubba Richardson's band culminate the evening, ending at eleven.
John and Mildred Mitchell will resign their posts at Lee in June to take new roles in Tennessee. Mitchell becomes associate professor of chemistry at Peabody in September while teaching acceleration courses for the National Science Foundation Institute. Mrs. Mitchell will teach math at Belmont.
The note lists names of students earning honors with three A grades including Molly Ann Hornsby and John Karl Kubelka, with Violet Laverne Lavender and others also named. An average of 2.5 is cited by Jack Dennis Mc Cartney. Additional honorable mention groups with two A's include Betty Louise Crites and Leroy S. Ginzel.
Johnson and Lee College art instructor Guy Johnson discussed Rene Magritte on Channel 8 in a Houston program sponsored by the Museum of Fine Arts. Panelists included William Lee Pryor of the University of Houston English Department and Richard Stout of the MFA. Rhett Cone visited Johnson’s exhibition at the Contemporary Arts Museum and will manage Johnson's work in New York.
Mrs O Hagan a Lee College veteran enters her 26th year of service in 1961. Her teaching career spans woodworking substitute government speech dramatics to English and French. She holds BA and MA from the University of Texas and summer work at Colorado. She loves reading travel golf ballet and plays in the Curtain Club. She joined Lee College in 1936 and values student friendships.
Ground breaking for a new gym marks the start of campus expansion. The project adds a regulation swimming pool four tennis courts two handball courts enhanced showers and equipment space and a six section physical education program requiring credits in four sections for full PE credit. A new library southeast of the liberal arts building will hold 700 students and 80 000 books with temporary fee set.
Jarry Kelley and Theron Wadll returned from the Bay Area debate tournament with a 3-1 record as one of 16 teams to win three or more rounds in the first elimination phase. Team 69 defeated Oklahoma nervy Christian Kansas State University and Rice University after a close loss to Baylor. Wayne Fortenberry and Wayne Oakes also posted a solid record amid their first tourney this year, beating Texas and Abilene Christian before losses to Baylor and Hardin Simmons. The event drew 101 teams from 27 schools and seven states February 3–4, with four junior colleges including Lee College participating.
