Nontraditional Students of Lee College nominate and award LC instructor Way to Go aul Lay. After balloting across the first two weeks of April 1 April 1 was elected, recognizing teaching excellence amid student organization proceedings.
Lee College historians coordinate a 1995 late spring project with Exxon Public Relations to publish about 20 articles. The work blends Baytown Vignettes pieces on early refinery housing and women workers with new history on Humble Oilers, WWII aviation fuel, and local impact. Exxon will print at least 4,500 copies, with Britt coordinating efforts.
Local mother JoEllen Young fights to keep one of the alleged perpetrators jailed. Carter was stabbed to death in his Klingbrook Drive apartment in 1992. Two men and a woman were later sentenced for the crime while a fourth suspect, Perkins, faces a plea deal for aggravated robbery. Young started a petition to oppose the plea bargain, hoping District Attorney's Office will press murder charges, drawing support from family and community.
Student Congress sponsors its second annual spring dance with a Greek Toga theme in Moser Hall Gameroom from 7 p.m. to 2 a.m. B.C. Colby and John Field note free food drinks music and a DJ ranging from reggae to country. Tickets are 2 with ID 3 without ID. For more information call 425 6570.
The 1994 Lee College graduation will be on May 13 at 7 p.m. on the East lawn weather permitting. About 125 graduates are expected among 231 eligible graduates from spring, summer and fall terms. English professor Noah Smith will deliver the commencement address as he leaves LC after this semester. He joined LC in 1964 and plans to write and travel Europe, hoping to leave a sense of pride in Lee College.
Kathy Whitmire, ex-Houston mayor and Rice University faculty member, spoke at Tucker Hall on April 21 about Texas politics and reforms. She criticized early voting for not boosting turnout, urged merit-based judicial appointments with periodic nonpartisan reappointments, noted Texas shift to a two party system, and highlighted women's underrepresentation in office.
B C Colby will lead Student Congress as president for 1994 95 replacing Josie Vargas. On April 28, 34 of 42 attendees voted for the new officers per adviser Liz Grimsley. John Fields to be VP, Allen Gaylord treasurer, Melissa Dolecki secretary. Alicia Jahan Tigh to become parliamentarian with Terri Thomas as adviser.
