Pay for play bill would make Nebraska players state employees

State Senator Ernie Chambers filed a proposal in January to pay UNL football players four-year salaries as state employees, a plan NCAA and college officials say would ruin amateur status and disqualify Huskers from NCAA and Big Eight play. Critics warn it creates unequal treatment among athletes, risks NCAA eligibility, and could break the university’s competitive balance while drawing sharp opposition from Nebraska officials.
