Reagan Proposes Deep Cuts to College Aid Budget

President Reagan's education budget seeks a 27 percent cut to student aid next year, totaling about 2.3 billion dollars. The plan would reduce overall education funding from 18.4 billion to 15.5 billion, eliminating the State Student Incentive Grant and Supplemental Educational Opportunity Grant programs and denying Pell Grants, NDSLs, or Work-Study for families above specific income thresholds.

Financial aid dollars found in face of 15 percent drop

Washington reports students have more aid than since 1981-82 yet inflation erodes value. The College Board and Peterson's surveys show nearly 18 billion dollars in 1982-83 aid, with 97 percent of freshmen receiving aid covering about 85 percent of needs. Merit awards rise modestly while need-based aid grows, but overall federal aid falls in constant dollars.

Thrift Shop Offers Bargains to Aid Local Causes

The Baytown thrift shop at 3401 Minnesota St run by Church Women United sells used clothing books shoes and knick knacks at low prices to aid families and local institutions. Most expensive dress about four dollars and men's suit around ten. Proceeds support a low income Child Care Center. Donations accepted Thursdays 8 a.m. to noon and Fridays Saturdays 9 a.m. to 4 p.m.

Workshops guide students toward better college decisions
