The issue divides campus factions as faculty argue the position is unnecessary amid existing administration. Administration and the Board of Regents support bringing back the vice president post, while several faculty members oppose it and some declined to comment.
Lee College officials will start bids to lease the 126 acre tract near North Main and Interstate 10. The property, previously leased to Leonard Singleton for grazing at $1,000 yearly, has seen subleasing of trailers, prompting the college to seek bids on the whole parcel. The move reflects future value as Houston grows and options for the site are explored.
The event will feature twenty companies including Exxon divisions Houston Lighting and Power McKay Chevron and Texas Parks and Wildlife from Austin. Representatives will provide job brochures for students with an Associates degree or higher. LC warns students about a California scholarship firm soliciting a $60 fee with false claims of $300 in aid. officials urge caution and emphasize Career Day as a prime employment aid.
The deadline for filing for a spot in the Board of Regents election has been set for March 21. The election will be held May 5 for three six year terms as terms of Regents John Adams Don Coffey and Charles Rosser expire. Coffey plans reelection while Adams will not seek another term Rosser undecided.
At the February 15 meeting the Board of Regents approved a one year extension for Vivian Blevins as president of Lee College. Her contract now runs through August 31, 1992 with a salary near $92,000 plus a 5 percent raise. Benefits include vacation, sick leave, life and hospitalization, plus a college vehicle and a Regents set expense allowance. Blevins has led LC since September 1986 after moving from Southeast Community College in Cumberland, Kentucky.
V. Lance Tarrance, pollster and GOP consultant, told a capacity crowd at a Feb. 21 symposium in Moser Hall that global and local shifts push America from an industrial to an information age. He warned reform must accompany economic change and noted anti-tax and anti-abortion themes mobilize voters as the GOP plans for two decades ahead.
