The Texas Legislature weighs a bill to raise the drinking age from 19 to 21 to meet a federal mandate. If not compliant, Texas could lose highway funds, with penalties increasing to 10 percent if not enacted by the following year. Legislators describe motives and oppose open container limits.
At a recent meeting Gertrude Teter urged students to start applying early for transfer housing and financial aid and to visit the university they plan to attend. She advised checking transfer credits and ensuring the major is offered, plus visiting the department and counselor. Barbara Watkins urged applying to multiple universities for aid and checking aid forms. For education majors she noted a May 29 Pre‑Professional Skills Test deadline and available loans, with guidance to use LC’s graduate scholarship form.
The Paper Bags, a six month old local band, wowed about 200 students in Moler Hall as part of a effort to win a SAC dance gig. Lead vocalist Mark Biddy and guitarist Don Morrison led a lively set including Jungle Love and Prince Purple Rain. band members include Tony Max, Mike Morrison, Donnie Victor, Chris Simicon, Vince Victor, and Robert Bell.
Lee College counselors remind students that the counseling center provides services throughout the semester and at registration. Counselor Gertrude Teter notes the final session from 1:30 to 2:30 p.m. March 30 in Bonner Hall 227, with tips on study habits, schedules, note taking, test prep, time management, and a Q&A period.
Activists on multiple campuses intensify divestment pressure against South Africa amid growing media attention. Berkeley, Maryland, Texas and Oberlin report arrests and demonstrations as ACA leaders note rising student awareness and calls to end investments in South African tied firms.
The second annual Lee College Chili Feed runs 11 a.m. to 4 30 p.m. Friday February 22 in the Social Science cafeteria. Tickets are 4 for all you can eat with rice or beans and iced tea. Desserts and delivery off campus. Proceeds aid state convention expenses. Tickets available in advance from any Press Club or Webb Society member or at the door.
Six Lee College Office Education Association members will compete in the 198 state Leadership Conference in El Paso February 28 to March 2 in office occupations contests. Participants include Jacinda Gotcher Toni Pina Lori Rhodes James Bayliss Rob Emanuel and Steffani Gibson. Awards go to top six in each category and openings include proofreading and spelling. A welcome party and Juarez tour are planned with awards Saturday and new state officers installed.
