LC considers acquiring 711 W Texas Ave for 1.2 million to gain 65,000 sq ft of classrooms and labs with roof, plumbing, fire system, and elevator needs. alternative options include a 35,000 sq ft building and 3.2 million expansion of Tech Voc I and library upgrades including a new 200 seat auditorium.
Regents consider a bond issue totaling 4.5 to 7 million dollars to fund Lee College expansion. Dr. Vivian Blevins cites needs including Rundell Hall science lab renovations and space for remedial classes. A 200 seat library auditorium is proposed, while a new gym is deferred.
Roberta Wright, LC instructor and campus steering co chair, explains House Bill 2182 bars students reading below ninth grade level from enrolling in college credit courses their first semester. She warns students lacking pre college work may fail the TASP test and require remedial instruction, while hoping LC’s curriculum already covers test objectives. The issue parallels HB 72 reforms and references to Page 5.
Wanda Ellis, a Lee College counselor since 1984 and eight year Baytown School Board veteran, will retire after this semester. She plans to work part time in April and may extend through May or June while staying connected to LC. Ellis praised the new counseling director position and said she may seek a college board seat while enjoying travel plans to Egypt and Greece after retirement.
