Statewide placement testing to begin fall 1989

Beginning in fall 1989 a new state law will require certain entering and currently enrolled students to take a common placement test. The exam will compare individual skill levels with those needed for undergraduate programs and will trigger remedial courses funded by the state for those under the standard.

Decaying Brunson Theater Signals Baytown Relocation

Ten years after the Brunson theater and two neighboring Texas Avenue structures were donated to LC, Baytown realigns its business district along Garth Road. The Brunson 311 W Texas Ave Morrison’s Furniture 408 W Texas Ave and Citizens Bank Building on Rollingbrook total about 50 000 square feet, remain unused and poorly maintained. Insurers say liability costs rise as fire risk grows with roofs failing and interior damage.

May 7 Election Set For Regents Seats

State changes shift the Board of Regents vote to May 7. Incumbents Alden Weaver Gwen Altwein and Mike Bargainer retire, while Dr. Keith Coburn seeks a seat after appointment in 1986. Filing deadline 5 p.m. March 23 in Rundell Hall business office.

Enrollment up 3.6 percent at LC spring term

Lee College reports a spring headcount of 3,728 as of Jan 29, up from 3,600 last spring and 3,552 in 1986. Part time enrollment rose 22 percent to 2,917 while fulltime students fell to 399. Final figures await the 12th-day funding count.
