Czolgosz Yelled In Abject Terror At Auburn Prison

The assassin of President McKinley, Leon F. Czolgosz, arrived at Auburn prison under Sheriff Caldwell and 21 deputies at 3 16 am amid a crowd of about 200. He collapsed in fear, was carried inside, and placed in a chair as guards removed his handcuffs. He later sat, moaning, and was moved to a special condemned row cell. The prison physician ordered removal to the cell, with guards escorting. Czolgosz appeared terrified, spoke little, and expressed sorrow for Mrs. McKinley. He claimed no accomplices and said he did not know the man in St Louis who claimed to have tied the handkerchief over the pistol. He was placed in a vacant condemned cell, with added guards and a dedicated guard to prevent self harm.
