The Lancaster Mercantile Company promotes a two day display of their millinery line on October 1 and 2. Miss Evans returns from Europe to present Parisian hats and fall styles. The store touts extensive dress goods, novelties, trimmings, silks, and velvets, promising low prices and leadership in the region.

News from San Antonio reports a disaster near the Rio Grande on the 25th. Thirteen prospectors sleeping in two camps along Alaminto Creek were swept and drowned by a waterspout or cloud burst after a 20 feet high flood roared down the dry ravine. Six bodies recovered, seven feared swept into the Rio Grande.
A violent clash occurred near Balangiga Samar between US troops and insurgents. Company C Ninth Infantry suffered heavy casualties with only 24 survivors, and reports indicate most others were killed. Survivors include Capt. Connelly and Lt. Bumpus with medical staff aiding the wounded.
At Canton and Roanoke a Ku Klux gang from Kentucky faces trial for murder highway robbery and train wreck attempts. Eighteen members were captured in Letcher and Bella counties and transported to Canton where the first arraignment began. Morgan Reynolds remains at large as other prisoners attempt escape. Eight inmates escaped Canton jail by sawing bars. one, Michael McGovern, is recaptured. bloodhounds and outside detectives aid ongoing pursuit.
Miss Laura Lemley aged 44, sister of Judge Advocate Lemley, died from burns at her Salem North Carolina home when a kitchen pane caught fire and her clothing ignited. She died within four hours.
