Hoyt L. Hayes was found guilty of murdering his wife after a five day trial in Valhalla. The verdict came after about five hours of jury deliberation and Hayes showed no emotion. Attorneys indicated a motion for a new trial.
Rog ger Known was hanged at 12 05 today for the murder of Rodger Fant son of county superintendent D R Fant. The deed occurred April 5 this year. He faced death without fear and remarked that if he was hung all who have been let off on self defense ought to be brought up and hung. The execution followed a knot tying and death sentence read by Dr J M Law son. Rev A G Wardlaw and Rev Croswell McGee visited him yesterday.
A runaway bicycle left J. B. Orner of Franklin Grove with a severe leg cut lasting four years, stubborn to medical care. Providence Rhode Island November 14 cotton manufacturers in Rhode Island order a general wage cut following Fall River mill owners 10 percent reduction planned for November 23. The move affects almost every mill in the state and several in Massachusetts and Connecticut with about 25000 workers seeing pay cuts starting November 23 or within the following week.
In Asheville North Carolina on November 14 the case of Huntt versus George W Vanderbilt for forty thousand dollars in damages over injuries from blasting for the Young Men's Institute building was decided against Huntt. He plans to appeal the ruling.
B F Bass of Fremont North Carolina reports he avoided sickness after using Electric Bitters for kidney trouble and says several neighbors were cured of rheumatism neuralgia liver and kidney disorders and general debility. Andrew H. Green, famed as Father of Greater New York, was shot and killed on his Park Avenue steps. Corhelius M. Williams, a black man, allegedly insane, claimed he acted to save his character after believing Green had slandered him. Three witnesses saw the fatal act, Williams fired, police seized the weapon, and he was examined at the station.
The Richland circuit court jury returned a verdict of 5800 for J A Pickett against the Southern railway. The amount covers loss of an arm after the plaintiff was injured while attempting to board a moving passenger train at St Matthews. A motion for a new trial was overruled.
Hamp Jones of Marion county had been under death sentence until yesterday morning when the governor commuted the sentence to life imprisonment. Advocates argued the deed was committed without malice as Jones was drunk. The intended execution date was November 27. The State.
In Columbia Saturday the Whaley cotton mills completed a reorganization. Stockholders approved issuing 3 million dollars in bonds secured by a mortgage on three plants. Proceeds will pay off existing obligations.
