A negro named John Chapman was shot Saturday evening by another man on the road to Cherny, eight miles from Chesterfield. Chapman died last night from the wound. A drunken melee near Reedy River led to a pistol shot injuring Henry Haynes. A family quarrel in Nev. left Dob Pitts and Williams wounded. Pitts unlikely to survive while Williams recovers. Crum, Charleston’s negro doctor, is a presidential recess appointment for Charleston’s port collector amid Senate maneuvering.
