Alfred L. Ballew, 63, a Confederate soldier, died in a guard house fire at Girard House Valhalla. He was reportedly drinking when locked up. coroner's jury rules arson suspected as flames erupted from within. Burial held at Westview Cemetery after services. Expert safe crackers blew open West Minister safes last night. about $125 stolen. police found no clues.

Catawbas Visit Columbia State Band Visits York Reservation

Mr Boyd the State’s Indian agent for the Catawba Reservation in York County visited the city with a collection of fine Catawba pottery and relics sent to Senator Graydon as thanks for support last year. He notes the nation has about 75 residents, including 20 full-bloods, with no deaths this year and several new additions to the community.

Supreme Court Rules on Chart Purchase in State

The State supreme court sustained Judge Ernest Gary, ruling counties owe no payment for $100,000 in school charts sold by a Chicago firm to county trustees. The case began after Treasurer McMahan’s inquiry and involved Tutwiler’s canvassing of counties and inflated chart values. The court did not decide individual trustee liability.

Judges Purdy and Dantzler Join Colombia Elections

In a joint assembly the Legislature elected a Supreme Court justice and six circuit judges, with Jones reelected. C. G. Dantzler of Orangepurge won the vacancy, Purdy received 84 votes to 42 for Galletty and 87 for Fraser. Mississippi City scene reports two executions at Gulfport and Pass Christian today.

Loan Lynching in Norfolk Ends in Hanging Trial

In Norfolk Virginia a 15 year old, Neal Stanback, was accused of assaulting a 70 year old white woman near the Pfeifer home. He was seized by a white mob, jailed, and spared lynching after a quick trial. Stanback was indicted, convicted, and sentenced to hang on March 12.
