General Floyd and a nearby traveler near Rock Hill avoided disaster when Floyd stepped off a southbound train to catch a connecting SC&G Ex train and narrowly escaped being crushed by the wheels. His quick action and presence of mind saved his leg as bystanders watched in alarm. Separately, T Ha ward Thayer, 75, a longtime Charleston post office clerk and Mexican War veteran, shot himself at home after overwork and melancholia, dying shortly after.
