Florence January 31. Bill King shot Sam Rogers and his son seven miles from Florence. The son not expected to live. the father shot in the shoulder. All involved are white.
Columbia Record reports Senator McLeod of Lee county urging passage of a toy pistol bill to teach children that pistols are to be left alone. Lynn Helm an Los Angeles attorney and his wife survived the Sunset Limited wreck near Vails Arizona after the rear Pullman cars escaped. Helm credits engineer Bruce for braking and saving the westbound train. He reports that 20 or more victims were buried in the flames and that most died instantly or within minutes from the heat.
Cecil of Bell county, under indictment as accessory before the fact in William Goebel’s murder, surrendered in Frankfort. He pleaded not guilty and was released on $3,000 bond after court appearance. Indicted January 1900s and a fugitive for eight years.
Edgefield Monitor calls for lawful, impartial proceedings in the Willman murder case. It urges juries to weigh all evidence, uphold the majesty of South Carolina law, and condemn lynching while demanding justice. The editorial warns against acquittal through delay or public pressure.

Niagara Falls N Y Jan 30 Fire from a lightning strike on a transformer in the Niagara Falls Power and Conduit Co power house damaged thousands of dollars of valuable machinery and shut down many factories. Temporary power arrangements were set to operate the local and Buffalo trolley line. About twenty of Lockport New Yorks fifty five factories were idle. Loss placed around 825000 with a bolt entering the transformer house directly.
In the Olympia Mill district special deputy L O C Knox shot and killed operative T P Vernon yesterday afternoon near half past five. Knox then surrendered to Sheriff Coleman after driving to town and notifying Chief of Police Owen Daly. Vernon allegedly pointed a loaded pistol at Knox, who fired to save his life.
