Hydrick Chosen a Circuit Judge and Other Elections
In Charleston on January 26 the General Assembly elected two circuit judges and the superintendent of the penitentiary. Ernest Gary was reelected. D E Hydrick of Spartanburg elected to succeed D A Townsend as first district judge. Townsend, Hydrick, and Sanders all sought the seat. Hydrick won 60 to Townsend 15, total 153, 77 needed. Griffith reelected as penitentiary superintendent. Penitentiary directors Hoffman and Holman faced a first-ballot vote with Mobley and Kirby: Owland 65, Kirby 120, Mobley 140, Sanders 122, Holman 12. Arthur Kibler of Newberry elected trustee of the Colored College at Orangeburg to succeed Ly Blease.

Tragedy in Gambling House in Nogales Arizona
In Nogales Arizona today four men died in a gambling house shooting. Will Walters, a discharged employee, entered the Palace Saloon owned by M M Conn and shot Cowboy Johnson at the poker table then killed Conn, the monte dester, and George Beadle before fatally shooting himself. Walters had been drinking prior to the rampage.
