Special to The State from Greekweod, Dev. 4. A black man from Mamlet sold five five gallon kegs of what he claimed was whiskey but passed as water to dealers, then pocketed profits. Constables pursued him as he sold fraudulently, and one church missionary treasurer lost money investing in the scheme. A traveling patent medicine vendor was fined for causing a street disturbance and earlier blistered a student with medicine. The mayor fined him ten dollars or twenty days. the man left town with promises to stay away.
