The box contained a healthy five week old girl. Magistrate Williams and Clifton authorities were notified as suspects are sought.
In Wetumpka Alabama George Howard a mob member charged in the lynching of Robert White was found guilty of murder in the first degree and sentenced to life imprisonment. Howard admitted participation and named 13 mob members. Six others’ trials are ongoing as remaining members reportedly fled the country.
Ben netteville South Carolina resident A A Krown recounts his wife’s recovery from dyspepsia after four bottles of Electric Bitters. The tonic is praised for aiding digestion and liver function. The piece notes a yellow fever board mosquito exposure in Habana has killed three of ten infected in the last three weeks.
Manila reports Lieutenant Hazzard of the Third Cavalry leading a Macabebe troop to seize Howard, an American deserter and Filipino leader who had frustrated U S forces for months. Ferguson and a Macabebe companion crept into a camp of 940 riflemen and 200 Bolomen at night, found Howard bound and gagged him, and carried him away without disturbing the camp.
Our Exposition Endorsed reports that 20,000 square feet of space was taken by states and nations newly arranging to exhibit at the Cotton States exposition in Charleston after executives from several states and nations visited the Pan American Exposition in Buffalo New York on August 28. The commissioners urged approval, and the executive committee heartily endorsed the southern fair.
