The Ganson Casi store shuts its doors after an era, calling attention to a greatly enlarged grocery department. Prompt service for quick delivery highlighted and all kinds of produce bought at market price.
Over the next 30 days the grocery department offers special prices on many items at cost or less. The merchant emphasizes doubled stock and room to spare, aiming to make the stores the best trading place in the state.
The Lancaster Mercantile Company notes the pardon of Jel W. A. Neal by Gov. McSweeney, a decision that surprised many. In New York on August 21 a mystery man shot himself at Presbyterian Hospital and collapsed beside the corpse of Amos Boesick, who died last night from a criminal operation. The stranger identified the woman's remains and hinted he caused her ruin. A doctor was arrested in connection with the affair, and the midwife is being sought.
J M Mercer was hanged in Tampa on Aug 23 after being convicted in May of assaulting a young girl Jeasie Taylor. The execution at noon broke his neck. he died insisting on innocence. His last words pleaded for his wife’s care.
A severe eastern cyclone struck Jersey City and nearby towns injuring hundreds. The Bijou theater was heavily damaged as wires and rails failed. Telecommunication systems were wrecked and transport suspended while trees and buildings suffered extensive damage.
Aug 25 San Antonio reports confirm famine in Zapata County where poorer residents face immediate starvation. Drought has scorched the land, cattle die, and no green trees remain except cactus. Relief funds exist but are far from sufficient. food must be hauled from Laredo in two days. Mayor Hicks has started a relief fund and awaits word from the war department on rations requested by Congressman Kleberg.

Special to The State Charleston Aug. 93 Mike Washington with another Negro held a desperate encounter with several police officers. He is Sam Campfield wanted in Screven County Georgia for murder. The accomplice was killed by officers during the arrest attempt. Campfield’s identity was established and Screven County officers will return him to Georgia for trial. Campsfield has been jailed on assault and battery charges as authorities pursued confirmation of his identity.
