Mr. John G. McLaughlin lost a Jersey cow due to dynamite left in a feed box. Workmen were digging a well when a dynamite stick was carelessly dropped into the cow stall. The next morning the cow was dead and the dynamite missing. whether it exploded inside her remains unknown.
News from Greenville New York reports a quarrel near Gardner's X Roads in the county ending in a double fatal shooting. William Gardner and Mack Dixon, both white, fought over a small matter. Gardner fired three shots into Dixon, who then toppled him and fired the remaining two into Gardner. Both men died shortly after.
In Statesville on August 12 Mamie Banks, a colored woman married to Henry Banks a waiter at Hotel Iredell, was found at her home on Depot Hill with her throat cut. A razor lay nearby. she severed the windpipe and gullet and died shortly after.
Editor reports a case of dyspepsia and stomach distress cured by Electric Bitters. After four bottles, the wife regains strength and appetite. Sold for 50 cents by Crawford Bros. and J. F. Murkery & Co.
Assistant Postmaster John G Poole and his family were swept away while crossing a mountain stream six miles from Lexington. A boon and his wife and three daughters aged one to eight were drowned. Poole and a three year old daughter escaped. bodies were recovered.
A brief promotional note urging readers to purchase a box of Cascarets Candy Cathartic laxative tonight. It claims genuine tablets stamped C. C. C and states they are never sold in bulk, available at all druggists for one shilling.
A charter was issued Wednesday to the Blacksburg Cotton Oil Mill with a capital stock of 15000 dollars. Albert Pollock serves as president.
Special to The State Newberry Aug 13 Bailey Workman colored shot his wife Louella Workman July 30 and died from the wound yesterday. They lived in No 6 township the county. Louella had gone to her father's house and refused to return with him, whereupon Bailey drew his pistol and shot her. A mortgage for 150000000 was filed in Jersey City Tuesday by Consolidated Tobacco Company of America to Morton Trust Company to secure 4 percent bonds.
Indian Territory officers report seven men who robbed a passenger train at Caney switch have been arrested. Two alleged assailants escaped custody as the investigation continues and authorities pursue the remaining suspects.
