The Lancaster Mercants Company announces changes to its General Passenger Department effective June 1 1901. Ototr Carlin and Lothla Cumpany are referenced as related parties in the overdue notice.
Three Negro men and two women killed when a bolt struck a cedar near a wagon on the Clark plantation seven miles from town. Ed Owens, 53, Peter Cameron, 21, and Laura Alston, 22, died instantly. Ed Owens’ white wife, once from Laurens county, and Ed Willians were badly shocked. Willians survived. Mules died and coroner’s inquest not required.
Election officials in Hampshire County announce a general election to select county commissioners. Voters will cast ballots on the second Sunday in August at designated polling places as required by state law. Qualified electors must take an oath of eligibility prior to voting, with the winner determined by the highest vote total. Polls open at a local site and close after the final ballot is counted. The notice includes oath requirements and seating details for the election authority.
