For 30 days many items are at cost or below with special prices on everything in the grocery division to improve room and stock. Our aim is to be the best trading place in the state with always right prices.
The report recounts a white man named Rector Staggs killed by a colored man named Will Camp near Campobello South Carolina after an illicit distillery confrontation. Camp is jailed. Separately United States Senator Benjamin Tillman spoke in Marinette Wisconsin endorsing lynching and white supremacy, arguing against black voting rights and praising mob justice as defense of Southern honor.
Knoxville reports a day of street car violence as rioters pull trolleys, tear wires, and mob Conductor Tripp who suffers a brain concussion after being dragged from his car at the Imperial hotel. In Smithville a mob hangs Charley Davis after a court hearing begins. In Columbus Uresceus wins a trot in 9 02, cutting his week old record.
Birmingham Aug 9 A mob hanged Charley Bentley a Negro near Leeds St Clair county at noon after he confessed to murdering Jim Vann alias William e. The coroner was dining nearby when the lynching occurred. the jury found Bentley responsible.
In Sadieville Kentucky Mrs S P Whitaker long troubled by chronic bronchial illness has reportedly been cured by Dr King’s New Discovery. Her husband credits the remedy with curing their granddaughter of a severe whooping cough. The ad touts cures for coughs colds la grippe bronchitis and lung troubles with guaranteed bottles and free trials at Crawford Bros and J F Mackey & Co drug stores.
Fire leveled the wholesale grocery of the W. A. Johnson Company in Columbia on Sunday, causing an estimated loss of 25000 dollars. In Savannah, Georgia, Georges Mitchell, a Black man, was hanged on Friday for the criminal assault of two women near Savannah three months prior.
The Richmond Dispatch notes statewide literacy figures: 301,379 white men literate and 36,413 illiterate, about one in eight illiterate. Among negro males over 21, 63,358 are literate and 76,764 illiterate, with over half of negro voters illiterate. There are 301,379 white males over 21 and 146,192 negro males over 21.
An old advertisement claims Dr. Kingu New Life Pills cure liver trouble and purify the blood. It promises a healthier appearance with a rosy complexion and clear skin, selling for 25 cents at Crawford Bros. and J. F. Mackey & Co.'s drug stores.
