In a tense sea voyage scene a judge recalls the Beaucaire grant dating to 1712 and a long life on the estate. The narrator meets Steven Knox aboard a vessel bound for St Louis as Carver and McAfee await below. The conversation reveals regret over misfortune and hints at distant roots in Louisiana.
The narrative recounts the Beaucaires history from the river journey south. Alphonse de Beaucaire received a royal grant of ten thousand acres, settled upriver near St. Louis, and built a grand mansion. His wealth made him a leading figure in the region until his death. His son Taikua pursued restraint over ostentation, while the family lineage intertwines with Louis court ties and plantation life along the Mississippi.
