District Court renders verdict in Ortega case and juror concerns
The State v Jose Ortega saw jurors uneasy about fair judgment toward a Mexican defendant. Ortega admitted self defense at preliminary hearing. he later fired at Night Marshal Syd John after a cafe incident. He was found guilty of felonious assault with attempted murder, with a penalty of up to ten years in the state penitentiary. Sawaya Killed in Railroad Yard Quarrel Over Gun
In an evening clash at the railroad yards Sam Sawaya was fatally shot and died after midnight. Sawaya and fellow car repairer William Jones had longtime quarrels and an imminent work change. Sawaya returned home with a revolver, later shot during a scrimmage. Jones was arrested after returning home to his wife and six children. No eyewitnesses, some have testified they saw the gun in the vicinity before the shooting. Sawaya, 21, a Kemmerer native, had been in the U S about three years.

New County Surveyor Named After Resignation
