J T McCormick of Twin Falls Idaho returns from Tulsa Oklahoma area with positive reports on western Wyoming oil fields. He and associates have leased land in the fossil field and plan to bring a large Government Star rig within two weeks to begin testing their holdings.
Gilbert Taysom, county treasurer, reports a $281257.44 balance, with $245000 collected on the 2017 tax levy and about $18000 outstanding. Delinquent taxes, now around 600 accounts, will incur penalties and interest. efforts focus on collection and public notices. Labor Loyalty Week events planned include a parade, mass meeting, and a dance to raise patriotically purposed funds.
M Fox visited Kom merer Monday returning from Idaho with 125 head of mixed cattle for his La Barge ranch. Edwin Bennion, Utah Secretary of State’s brother, accompanied him. They handled Herefords and Shorthorns and unloaded at Opal before driving out to the lane.
The ink for Fossil Petroleum had caused delays but has now arrived in the field. It was unloaded at Fonsi on Monday and began moving toward its position on the southeast quarter of section 22, amid efforts to report developments accurately.
W A McAlaney of Genevine traveled yesterday to Kemmerer en route to Green Tiger City then Kowth into Utah to inspect a manganese mine under option for possible leave and bond. A strong demand for manganese drives the plan as wartime needs rise and future shortages loom. he believes the stake could be highly profitable if the market price supports mining here.
Miss Hazel Horn of Big Piney traveled with her father W A Horn to Kemmerer by auto last week. She is known for competing in the Indies' relay race at Marbleton two years ago during frontier days, where despite race delays she impressed with handling of horses.
Montpelier Mayor Hob Sneddon visited Diamondville and announced Montpelier’s new sewer system is nearly complete. The main sewer is in use, with final work connecting laterals to homes underway. Cost about 50 000 dollars funded by bonds of 49 000. Bear River drainage runs 10 000 feet from the depot to the river.
In Fossil field work, Heckla Wyoming and Fossil Petroleum place new rigs led by Lee Steinbrook of Casper. Idaho Wyaning Well No 1 spudded last week as Thy Wood Oil and Development Co drills at depth near 450 feet. Herman charts ground for Fossil Petroleum and Heckla-Wyoming rigs, with snow delaying surveyors while plans for a boarding house central to section 11 progress.
A fire damaged a bunk house at the Kewmerer Coal company mine. Officials said the blaze occurred at the mine area assisted by workers from sixteen nearby mines. Contents of the bunk house were lost and the incident is under investigation.
Mayor Peter Gordon Jr calls Kemmerer citizens to observe Labor Loyalty Week starting February 10 1918 in homage to Abraham Lincoln. The initiative, in cooperation with the American Alliance for Labor and Democracy, urges meetings and actions to promote freedom justice democracy and equality in the town.
The suit filed by Ridgely and fourteen others against the Cretaceous Oil Co over December events faced dissolution of a preliminary injunction after two days of hearing before Judge Arnold. A second injunction was granted on bond terms of $15,000 to cover damages, with a further bond deadline set for the eighth of the month. The judge did not comment on the contract’s validity.
Seven year old Arthur Baker son of Mr and Mrs E T Baker of Diamondville was killed when about 240 pounds of ice fell from a rear ice sled as children hauled ice from a railroad car. The accident occurred behind the butcher shop where the endgate loosened and ice slipped out. Funeral set for 2 pm at the L D S church Diamondville with burial in Diamondville cemetery. Attending Cheyenne hearing were Charles Luckey P Budd and attorney R R Rose representing majority stockholders of the Cretaceous company.
