Not Guilty Verdict in Hamlin Case and Local Court Updates

The jury returned a not guilty verdict for the State v Horace Hamlin just after 1 a.m. Friday. The State v Jesse Twigs ended with a guilty verdict but leniency advised, one year at Sioux Falls. Additional trials included Ross Thompson, Henry Kruger, and Mrs Whittemore. Thompson was found guilty of assault with leniency in fine. The McGarraugh Jostes cow case resulted in acquittal for Jostes. Other notes cover Joseph McGreevy pleading guilty to assault and a civil suit verdict for Frank McGraw versus the Stanley County Creamery. A separate case involves Tom Barnes and larceny of Adolph Mulhausen’s team with a later trial date set. Regulation Warns Against Small Checks After 1910

A public notice warns against writing checks for less than one dollar after January 1 1910 under the section cited, with penalties including a $500 fine or six months imprisonment for noncompliance.

Ed Estes Duped in Sioux City Cattle Scam

A Belvidere Times reprint claims Ed Estes was lured into a scam by a smooth talking passer, allowed himself to be tied into a bad investment plan, then sought money from others. He allegedly recruited an agent to collect 30 percent monthly for six months on a 3400 dollar stake, with grafters paying up to avoid state service.
