Des Plaines River Flood Survey Relieves City Officials

City officials led by Mayor Cronin Engineer Levens and staff surveyed the Des Plaines river flood near Lockport after a freshet. They found no imminent menace though Sixth Ward leaks worry residents. Chicago river flow slowed, Joliet drainage records noted, and 220000 cubic feet per minute passed over the dam as gates remained open.

Eight True Bills Return Then Eight True Bills Today

The March grand jury reported to Judge Marshall in the Circuit court after a week in session and returned eight indictments seven of which are listed. Charles Bregori faces larceny two counts and assault counts for stealing a revolver money and other items from a fellow boarder. Edward Norton and Charles Dennison each charged with two counts of assault, Norton a fugitive. P J Spellman faces a single count of operating a confidence game. John Kraft charged with assault. Jury also urged jail replacement due to insanitary conditions and issued bench warrants for all defendants.

Joliet to Host Annual Encampment of Patriarchs Militant

Joliet wins the bid to stage the first week of June gathering of the Department Council of Patriarchs Militant in the city. The event, expected to be the largest ever held here, will bring visitors from across Illinois and neighboring states, with Canton Joliet organizing multiple committees and a Powhatan lodge open meeting tonight. The Illinois department commander Major General James Harris and Chicago dignitaries are among the expected attendees, and a supper will precede sessions for Royal Purple and chevaliers families.

Indictments Sought Over Steel Filings at Chicago Plant

The Sanitary District of Chicago plant case turns on steel filings found in machinery. Evidence presented was deemed insufficient to indict the three individuals named. The Police court action against the Tender brothers is scheduled for trial next Tuesday morning.

Funeral for Floyd H. Smith in Channahon

The funeral of Floyd H. Smith of Channahon will be held Monday afternoon if the Millsdale bridge is safe, with services at 1 PM at the residence and interment in Channahon. If the bridge is impassable, brief services will occur at 9:45 AM, then the body will be transported via Santa Fe train, arriving in Channahon around 2 PM.

Piece of Brass Taken From Engine

Charles Martin a foreigner had a taste for brass and stole a 20 pound brass piece from a locomotive at Illinois Steel Co yards. After he was traced to his home at corner Ohio and State streets the missing piece was recovered. The engine could have suffered serious damage. Magain received a ninety day sentence in the county jail in police court.

Burglars Saw Panel From Door of Saloon

Burglars entered Fred Johnson saloon by sawing a panel in a hall door on Collins and Jackson streets and unlocked three inner locks. They opened a cash register stealing $10.65. no cigars or liquor were taken. Ernest Franzen found the breach at 5 a.m. no clues or suspects observed.

Will County Grand Jurors Laud Warden Murphy at Joliet Penitentiary

Readable resolution from Will County grand jurors dated March term 1908 endorses the management of Illinois state penitentiary at Joliet under Warden Murphy. It commends sanitary conditions discipline and humane care and asks copies be sent to Governor Charles S. Deneen and state officials.

Rockdale man fined for coal theft from railroad

Joseph Osworth of Rockdale was fined a total of 42.25 in police court this morning for stealing coal from the Chicago Rock Island and Pacific Railroad. He was arrested by a detective early today.

Funeral services for H. F. Bowen are set for Sunday at 2 30 in the home of Mrs. E. Bytewart 405 Herkimer Street. Rev R Edward Sayles pastor of the Eastern Avenue Baptist Church will officiate.

Succeeds McClung Appointment of Moore as Furnace Superintendent

M J Moore former chief chemist at Illinois Steel South Chicago plant has been named superintendent of blast furnaces in Joliet, succeeding Matthew McClung who died this week. The change was announced by General Superintendent Mathias and Moore will take full control by Monday morning.

Retaining Wall and Dyke Praised After Flood Test

The retaining wall and dyke along Hickory Creek, built last July, faced a severe test this week. It stretched from the city limits on the northwest side to 380 feet southwest, flooding last spring left two feet of water in homes, but this year residents report no trouble and praise the structure. It saved more money this week than the cost to build last year.
