Flood Threat Peaks as Hickory Spring Creeks Overwhelm City

Flooding from Hickory and Spring creeks swelled basements and streets, prompting police and street workers to move residents to safety. By midnight water receded, but areas along Ferdinand Street Cass Street and allied districts faced heavy inundation with several rail lines and utilities temporarily disrupted.

Detectives Engage Highwayman in Midnight Shootout

Detectives Daniel Coyne and George Mason of the city police chased a armed highwayman through the Alton freight yards south of the city. The bandit robbed passengers in Pontiac and escaped aboard a northbound freight. the officers exchanged fire as the man vanished into darkness, leaving Coyne unarmed.

Illinois Steel seeks venue change over alleged bias

Illinois Steel Company asks Circuit Court for a change of venue alleging Judge Marshall is biased and that a fair impartial hearing is unlikely. This follows a wave of similar petitions amid other cases including Krause estate proceedings granted to Judge Dibell. Meanwhile Judge Marshall ordered Rudolph Gottleib to file a copy of an attachment affidavit in the Max Cohn matter. Anna Werner’s personal suit against Joliet city was dismissed and the parties settled out of court.

John Dunn Dead After Long Illness in Austin

John M. Dunn, formerly with the Chicago Lake Shore Eastern R A, died at his parents home in Austin near Peoria after a yearlong illness. He came to Joliet three years ago.
