Growth of Illinois Odd Fellows Reaches New High

The Illinois Odd Fellows and Rebekahs report over 83 000 members in the state with a record year of growth. Grand officers praise the expansion as Joliet hosts the convention with speakers from Lincoln Springfield Joliet and Chicago. Decision in Miller estate fish case expected this month

The Supreme Court is expected to hand down a decision in the estate of the late Mrs Cornelia A Miller. The dispute involves nephews Charles M Henry M and George M Fish and the appeal by Charles M Fish. Hearing before special master H E Wood has stalled due to attorney illness and no tangible progress has occurred. The estate is estimated at about half a million dollars.

Denied new trial may appeal in Mokenn cases

Circuit court denied a new trial in Herbert Hennings minor with mother Ellen Hennings against Elgin Joliet and Eastern Railway Co. A March verdict of not guilty preceded the ruling. The morning session also involved Mrs. Gussie Hughes versus the Village of Mokena over injuries from a defective walk. Separately, a judgment of 125 dollars was entered for George Peterson minor by his mother Mary Carlson against Pratt Manufacturing Co. Foreclosure decree granted to George W. Smith and Thomas Foley against William F Charles H and Katie Richards heirs of Mary Richards.

Insane Man Woodward Sought by City Officials

Chief of Police McMasters seeks the wife and family of James Eliot Woodward, claimed resident of this city, declared insane at Winfield Kansas yesterday. He says he left Joliet twelve years ago, leaving a wife and two daughters here. Probate Judge Shreeves and local directory findings clash with hospital refusals due to state residency questions.

City to Replace Asphalt with Brick at Chicago and Clinton

The street car company will replace asphalt between tracks at the Chicago and Clinton streets curves with brick after a city request. Materials are delivered and work will begin soon due to brick’s longer wear.

John R. Staehle submitted a $6,000 bid for Shooting Park at a Sharp Shooters association meeting last night. The four acre property has been held by the group since 1867 and, unless other bids arrive, Staehle’s offer may win over the city school board which has not yet replied.

Release Sought for William Church in Attack Case

Relatives of William Church of 2009 Cass street seek his release from county jail after he was charged with attempting to assault Mrs. Charles Tuck of 528 Meeker avenue. Habeas corpus proceedings were begun in Circuit Court but hearing remained incomplete. Church remained in jail after State's Attorney Helen asked for continued custody. Mrs. Tuck testified she kept Church under guard with a revolver until detectives from Captain Murphy and Lieutenant Connors arrived.
