The Patr iarchs Militant and Ladies Militant elected officers yesterday afternoon in Mattoon and Danville. Commander Mrs Joseph I an and Lt Commander Dr Rose Lapham named for the Ladies Militant. Rockford drill team won $50 prize with prize cup. Deilwood Park gathering praised by Joliet visitors.
Speeches by prominent members preceded the decision. Mattoon was nearly chosen for 1909, besting Joliet after a three year cycle of contention. Joliet supports Mattoon now, clearing Joliet to host this year. Mattoon's bid drew near unanimous backing for next year while two officers and a few posts were filled. Quiet prevailed in the lodge halls as visitors left for a Dellwood picnic.
Joseph Gindra a Lockport resident in poor health delirious from fever used carbolic acid to end his life early this morning. Found by family after midnight he died before a doctor arrived. Coroner Noel held an inquest and the jury returned a verdict consistent with the foregoing facts.

Supt of Streets Friedrich failed to secure a Conway Paving Co. representative after returning from Aurora. The Chicago office was contacted for a man to arrive Monday. Work will start once he reaches the city. A six o clock car to Plainfield tomorrow carries fishermen.
William Dunne, former Westinghouse clerk, sought in Chicago for forging and cashing a $400 check using employer signatures. He was traced after a traveling salesman recognized him in a Chicago saloon, reported him, and police arrested him in Joliet. Dunne, now drug-addicted and physically frail, faced the charge.
Arthur Nelson, age fifteen, living near the city, brought ten groundhog heads to the town clerk and received 25 cents per head as state bounty. He killed the entire lot in a week and a half, aided by a small dog, amid a season described as more numerous than years past. The town has also paid bounties on crows, with one man collecting nearly 300 heads at 10 cents each, plus a 5 cent bounty on crow eggs.
In the circuit court this morning six individuals took the oath of allegiance and became naturalised citizens of the United States. Gregor Cesar from 1806 North Center Street Austria Frank Novak of 1306 North Center Michael Scislowski 1611 Highland Avenue Germany Zola 1223 Summit Street and Conrad Lundstrom 409 Landau Avenue Sweden were naturalised. The rest were given until September 26 to study the constitution and government before reattempting the oath.
The Jo liet Modern Woodman drill team from four local camps, led by Captain F. W. Pearson, staged a final practice in Peoria jail yard wearing new uniforms after a fire endangered their regalia. They depart at 9 33 tomorrow for the state Woodman convention with high hopes and a $500 prize for first place. The roster includes H J Hagmayer, C H Merrill Arnold Victor Anderson Harry Blood F Brummond and others.
Delegates for the Ancient Order of Hibernians in Indianapolis next month will represent counties at the national convention. Each county votes five times and county officers or alternates attend. Attending are J F Quinn J J Foster and Mr and Mrs Patrick Condon. The convention opens July 21 and runs for about a week.
Mayor Cronin plans to publicly announce Monday the names of the committee chosen to assist him with matters related to the new city hall. It is understood the members have been practically decided upon.
Sixteen Bartleson Post G A R members traveled to Chicago for a department commander elect reception hosted by George H. Thomas Post. Aurora was the only other city besides Chicago represented. Attendees included E W Willard and 15 others listed.
Henning A. Hanson travels to Galesburg to push Joliet as host for the 1909 Retail Clerks' association of Illinois convention. The annual gathering is set for tomorrow, with Hanson serving as the Joliet local delegate.

Judge Dibell handles multiple chancery and intervening petitions with Monday deadlines and amended filings.
Jacob Mager a Civil War veteran and city pioneer died in an ambulance while being transported from Adler street to St Josephs hospital. Funeral arrangements were made at Damen undertaking rooms Bluff street and Corner Noel notified. The letter was with Mager when he died.
The Highway Commissioners granted Chicago Telephone Co. permission to set poles east of the city along sections 14 and 28. The payroll for the action totaled $489 and was approved. A concert at Electric Park is scheduled for tomorrow.
Mayor John R. Cronin attempted to mediate a threatened South American conflict but failed in his mission and admitted preferring to settle a war than to adjust the factional dispute.
The German American club plans a meeting tomorrow at two o'clock at Lasser's hall. The notice indicates a local gathering for members.
