Man Taken to Hospital After Attack Near Cheney Barn

George Matthews of 632 Clinton Street, a hostler at a local livery, was found severely injured with three deep scalp wounds near the Cheney barn on Buren Street about 5 PM. He was delirious and drunk and could not explain how he sustained the injuries, though officers suspect assault. He was taken to St Joseph’s Hospital where doctors report he will be unable to work for some time but his condition is not serious. Gardner is also mentioned in connection with the incident.
