Formation of the Association for the Relief of Jewish Widows and Orphans
In 1855 an Executive Committee organized the Association for the Relief of Jewish Widows and Orphans with Gershom Kursheedt as Chairman and D C Labatt as Secretary. The charter was adopted March 14 1855, founding a Home to aid indigent Jewish widows and orphans beyond New Orleans. The group secured ground on Jackson and Chippewa, elected officers, and began plans for building a home with a budget exceeding ten thousand dollars.
