Emergence of New Orleans Jewish Orphans Home
In 1854 the New Orleans Jewish community faced worsening widow and orphan needs after yellow fever epidemics. Leaders proposed a separate asylum for poor widows and orphans, convening a mass meeting at the old Masonic Hall on St. Charles Street to organize support and establish the home.
