Homeward hopes and land prospects from Surango Colorado
In a May 15 1899 letter from Surango Colorado Dr W T Jurreves shares experiences of travel and details on land near the Ute reservation and San Juan Animas valleys. He describes irrigation schemes by a ditch company offering 1000 acre parcels for ten thousand dollars with water rights and added reservoirs to prevent shortages. He notes healthful climate fertile soil and potential for a small family colonization, urging friends to write to Hon Joe Prewitt in Durango or wait for his return for questions. He also recounts Aztec ruins exploration and a near dangerous ascent, ending with a personal closing.
