Silver dollars moved to new mint for certificate security

On May 9 680 wagon loads each three tons carried 68 million dollars were shifted from the old Philadelphia mint and post office vaults to the new mint. An armed guard rode each wagon and a government officer checked the boxes with 1000 dollars from the old to the new location. The silver dollars form the basis for security of silver certificates now in circulation.
