Washington reports Speaker Reed will retire from Congress to join a New York law firm. Adjutant General Barry orders Robt Clapp of Fairbury to organize a militia company there as part of Illinois defense.
Fifteen men from Yorkston, aboard Dewey's vessel, were ambushed Tuesday while attempting to rescue eighty Spanish soldiers, three officers and two priests surrounded by four hundred insurgents. One Nebraskan, Chas Morrissey of Lincoln, is among the missing.
The governor signed a reform ending the blanket ballot with columns rooster eagle and cottage. It restores a pre 1897 ballot layout except names no longer appear in alphabetical order. The party with the most votes for head of the ticket in the county gains first ticket place, and voters must mark a cross after each chosen candidate.
A Benton Harbor physician claims a potato pillow remedy cures men with ingetis. The method involves boiling potatoes with skins, placing the patient on the hot pillow slip with neck and spine resting on the heat, and remaining until heat wanes, repeating if needed.
