Vice President of City Savings Bank Detroit accused in dramatic bank fray after the bank closed. He allegedly received over a million dollars without security or board knowledge while two other Detroit banks and a trust company reportedly held a large check for 662000 pounds.
In Detroit on February 10, Vice President Frank C. Andrews of the City Savings Bank was arrested and charged with fraud for securing over 1 million dollars from the bank without security. Cashier Henry R. Andrews is ill, and the bank is suspended pending recovery of losses estimated around 1.16 million. Directors and the Clearing House Association blame reckless stock speculation and mismanagement.
Special to the Indianapolis Journal reports the Brookside summer home of J. H. Bass, the millionaire founder, burned at dawn. Loss estimated at 200000 dollars. By 3 a.m. nothing was left of the palatial residence. Bass’s farm lies about three miles west of the city and was inaccessible to the fire department. The furnishings were costly and the estate was famed as the finest country residence in northern Indiana.
Edmund A. Dubose and Lewis Russell, deserters from Company E Ninth Cavalry, who stole arms and joined insurgents in August, were hanged February 7 at Guinobatan Albay in front of about 3000 people. The military commission tried them and Captain Henry H. Wright supervised the orderly execution. Native petitions urged clemency but were rejected as their crimes breached the military code during war.
In Minneapolis on February 10 a ruptured steam pipe in the Nicollet Hotel engine room burned three people and imperiled a fourth. The injured include E. R. Steel deputy boiler inspector, A. W. Sutherland Nicollet Hotel engineer, and Eddie Hart fifteen a Northern Pacific office junior who is the worst hurt. Hart was rushed to the Northern Pacific Hospital in Brainerd. James Lyon the hotel fireman escaped death by leaping behind a door as steam and hot water surged past.
Theodore Roosevelt Jr aged son of President Roosevelt is seriously ill with double pneumonia at Groton College Infirmary Massachusetts. Dr Alexander Lambert joined Dr Shattuck and Dr Warren amid a crisis as the president and Mrs Roosevelt stayed close, while a second bulletin notes the patient remains critical with high fever and weak respiration.
A sixteen year old girl Nora Fuller was found nude and murdered in a vacant Sutter street house. Autopsy indicates chloroform and strangling within ten days. A man calling himself John Bennett or C B Hawkins rented the house and may be linked by a seven foot cord with blood on its strands and bloodstained handkerchiefs. Authorities seek the suspect, with an alibi for M A Serebrenk and a missing barkeeper in Indiana tied to the case.
New York February 10 The coroner jury investigating the dynamite explosion in the Rapid Transit tunnel excavation returned a verdict naming Ira Shafer sub contractor Ernest P Matheson chief engineer at the time and Moses Epps powder house foreman as responsible for the deaths at the site
Charles N. Elliott as County Committee Chairman issues the call for Republic primaries on March 14. Local party meetings will organize candidate selection and district representation.
County Republican chairman Elliott announced the direct primary for county and township nominations set for Friday March 14. The call lists the county executive committee members and the appointed election commissioners by ward and township, detailing offices to be nominated including US congressman, prosecutors, judges, legislators, clerks, treasurer and more across several townships.
Republicans urged to attend primaries Tuesday November 4 1902 for mayoral and county offices. Primary tabulations set March 15 1902 at city clerk’s office. Several candidate names omitted and corrected for coroner sheriff auditor and county commissioner. Chairman Elliott and Secretary Negley to run party from city clerk’s office until summer headquarters opened.
The Marion Club will run a special train to Terre Haute for the Lincoln League meeting tomorrow. The Big Four line will depart at about 10 o clock with return trips possible when the crowd is ready. Fare is reduced to 1.75 dollars and the party includes a 20 member band.
Cannonading heard from dawn toward the Venezuelan coast as the revolutionary steamer Libertador clashes with gunboats. General Andrade joined Libertador after landing insurgents at Cumarebo near La Vila de Goro. Crespo reportedly sunk after shaft damage. Caracas braces as insurgent activity grows near Barquisimeto and Castro’s government weakens.
General Maximo Gomez arrived in Santiago de Cuba amid a large reception with bands, police, and firemen. He commented on Cuba's political future, urged U S support for a stable government, and called for closer Cuba United States trade, favoring reciprocal tariffs and sugar and tobacco duty reductions. He planned a visit to Santo Domingo to see a sick relative and expected a quick return.
In Savannah on February 10 the case of B D Greene John F Gaynor E T Gaynor and W H Gaynor indictments for conspiracy to defraud the government in river and harbor contracts will be heard in federal District Court tomorrow. Carter and Connolly are also named with Connolly seeking a separate trial and possibly aiding the prosecution. The defendants absent Carter will appear to plead with Greene and the Gaynors filing pleas in abatement and a general demurrer. A large witness list is in attendance.
Frank James, once of the James boys, filed in Circuit Court to restrain a local theater from presenting The James Boys in Missouri. He argues the play glorifies outlawry and makes heroes of criminals, injuring youth. Attorneys argued the case and a decision is pending.
A petition from the New Richmond Indianapolis Interurban Terminal Company requests permission to use multiple city streets. The document, presented to the board, outlines the proposed route and street usages required for the interurban terminal project.
Charles Finley Smith pleads for city privileges tied to a proposed three-cent fare. The item notes that all but one interurban company entering the city expressed interest in protesting the measure, highlighting local transit tensions and regulatory dispute.
The Indianapolis Interurban Terminal Company asks the Board of Public Works for a city franchise to operate a double-track street railway with three-cent fares and a union interurban power station.
